So if an owner abuses his/her Golden Retriever or Black Lab. What are the chances you're going to read about it mauling it's owner to death?

There ARE many many cases of well kept (un-abused) pit bulls mauling and killing their owners and others for no apparent reason.

Pitbulls don't just "snap" nor does any other breed. Pitbulls with temperament issues are always the result of poor breeding, poor training, poor socialization and/or poor ownership. The don't "snap" any more frequently than any other poorly breed, poorly trained, poorly socialized, poorly owned breed. Shih tzu breed bothers me more than pitbulls.

Bullshit...

Wow, probably 80%+ of the Dogs in this list are Pit Bulls.

Humans > Animals. Many dog lovers have this backwards.

+1000

I'll guarantee you that you will have the same attitude when she's 16, 17, 18, ... There's little upside and a huge downside to trusting a fighting breed.

And likely the same attitude when she is 1,000,019.

Fifteen plus years back a young boy, IIRC eleven or so....Was killed by a pit bull owned by the family he was staying with. My memory on this is fuzzy as I basically tried to shut it all out. I think he was a special ed/DD kid as well.

The dog took out his throat and his lower jaw and cheeks. It was gruesome. I responded to assist with any medical as I was closer than the nearest Deputy.

I have never trusted another pit bull again and have ACTIVELY told friends to NOT adopt or own one. I know sort of a prejudiced stance but I stand by it.

So sad to read about this poor woman. Some breeds are just not people friendly.

That's in the last 15 years. Previously it looks like Rotties were supposedly the ones to fear above all others.

A number of years ago my wife and our daughter (8th grade at the time) were walking our male GSD. A loose pit bull attacked them. Our dog put himself between my wife and daughter and held the dog off until the asshole owner finally showed up and took control of the pit bull. Our dog was never the same after that. He became more aggressive himself, and ultimately, we felt it necessary to have him put down. I hate those fuckin’ things

In another life, I was driving with my boss in a van and we saw a horrific scene; a man with his terrier hoisted in the air while he was trying to kick the shit out of an adult pitball, mauling a small poodle, while a pit puppy, no older than 8 weeks, was doing the same.

An old woman was on the ground surrounded by some other people, in a deep state of shock.

My boss and I stopped the van and jumped out to see what we could do; my boss grabbed a 2 foot section of 2X4 from the back and proceeded to beat the adult pitbull, to no effect. Seeing this, I tore out a scalloped concrete piece of edging from a lawn, 2 feet long, and point-blank hit the dog in the head several times. Blows that would have killed a human. The dog simply stopped attacking the poodle and stepped back, and sat down and panted.

What struck me most was that the pitbull puppy was still chewing at a now dead poodle, until my boss kicked it off.

The ambulance came to take the owner away. And you needed a sponge to get the poodle away from the scene.

At that point, I've had enough of pitbulls. Call me a bigot, but ever since, especially seeing an untrained pup have a poodle for dinner, I decided no when it comes to pitbulls.

The wife's, sister in law, was attacked bye her mom and dads pit bull in the face. Spent time in the ER and might have to have another surgery. She had been with the dog many times before the attack.
I was delivering court paperwork to a family when a pit bull came at me from inside the house. I was clearing leather when the owner was able to control the dog.
I like dogs, all types, but they just plain scare the crap out of me and I do not trust them.

This.

Too many people get these "bully" breeds (and others like Rottweilers or GSDs) and have no idea what they are doing. If you don't have a dominant personality don't get a dog that requires it.

Unfortunately too many people walk around thinking their big dog is a person and treat them as such - leading the dog to think they don't have to listen to the human.

I don't like pit bulls, but then again there are other breeds I don't like either. Chows, Jack Russells, pretty much all ankle biters.

Most of all, I hate untrained, disobedient dogs of all sorts. Which is 95% the human owners fault.

I agree completely. I have a 2 yr old female pit that I rescued from some unscrupulous neighbors who were breeding them for income. I have pictures of the living conditions and they were deplorable. She is a sweetheart of a dog but very powerful. If she had a bad disposition I'm not sure I would want to tangle with her, but she doesn't. She is passive. My brother has two pits that are as gentle as lambs. IMO, they get a bad name because of bad owners. There are far more breeds with worse reps but the pit is the one that garners the attention.

I have seen and known, a few dogs just like you are describing, snap at a moments notice out of nowhere.......without any provocation.......what were normal docile dogs, just go into full attack mode on either another animal or person. I will not EVER trust them, EVER.

Generally when another breed attacks....let's say unprovoked.....whether it be a German Sheperd or Rottweiler, first off it happens on a much much less frequent basis......but they bite.....they may cause a scar or someone may lose a finger......but generally they DON'T maul the living shit out of someone until they're dead and cannot be stopped even by their own owner like pitbulls do......when pitbulls go full attack, there is NOTHING that will stop them, short of a .357, usually......until they are damn good and ready to stop.

IMHO the reason most people that get pit bulls pick that breed is to show they can control the biggest, baddest, breed of dog. The same reason guys build the biggest truck, spend a ridiculous amount of money on a .50 DE so they can have the biggest gun at the range, or buy the stereo with the biggest speakers. It's the biggest and baddest and I can master it.
