Just for clarification 'Pit Bull' is not a bread. Now I return you to the Pit Bull bashing party...

This discussion will not go well.

One Side: "It seems like every time I hear about a dog or dogs mauling a human being it's always a Pit Bull. This leads me to conclude that Pit Bulls are dangerous - especially because I often read that everyone who was familiar with the dog(s) said they thought the dog would never, ever hurt anyone."

The other side: "I LOVE my Pit Bull(s) - they'd never hurt anyone!"

There can be no reconciliation with these two groups.

I found what you said riveting.

Remember, that Pit Bulls were bred to fight other dogs, not people. Their handlers had to be able to go into the pit to separate the dogs without being themselves attacked.

Two of my sisters rescue pit bulls. At least one had to be put down after biting a neighbor and every single one of them was borderline antisocial to other dogs or outright aggressive to other dogs.

My sisters love them. Kisses, hugs, wouldn’t hurt a fly etc. I watch them like hawks around my kids and I’m not paranoid. One of them doesn’t like to be touched once it’s bedtime by anyone. Gives a little growl. They accept that as normal. Wtf?

The breeds themselves might be salveable but they attract some horrible owners (not my sisters lol).

I wouldn’t have one. To each his own. I have personally witnessed enough incidents that I don’t feel they are worth the risk.

Or even know anything about them other that what you've read in the paper or heard on the news?

I'm another apologist too, I guess.

I've had several Pit Bulls, and they have all been great dogs.
I WILL get another one when my current one passes.

A dog of any breed that has been mistreated or is trained to fight will be a problem.

I speak from experience and have a scar below my lower lip to prove it. Was at my friends house when I was 11, had known his pit bull for 2 years and was a "good" dog. We were both in the backyard washing my dad's boat at the dock, but both of us on land at that point, and out of the blue the dog went into full attack mode at me, jumped up on me with it's paws on my shoulders and bit me.....only way it stopped (didn't listen to my buddy yelling for it to stop or come) was he sprayed both of us with the garden hose. And YES, it just snapped out of the blue. I was 11 and will never forget it.

Never owned a Pit Bull. Shot one though......so far. Wink

I agree with those who say it is a useless breed AND that the breed is ruined.

It is THE most prevalent breed in the hood, and at the pound. Regards 18DAI

There are a lot of conflicting statements in the story.

Dogs mauling her to death then guarding her.

Guess they could run a DNA on the two dogs at the bite wounds.

Not taking sides either way, although I am very leary of Pitbulls, or any guardian dog.

Our local shelters are clogged with Pitbull/mixes.

Being bitten or attacked would be a deadly thing to go through, adding in the fear of a rabid dog, I wouldn't let a suspicious dog close to me.

I think that is pretty typical predator behavior, to guard a kill. Had she been killed by two wolves, for instance, they would do the same thing.

I have never owned a pit bull, don't know any pit bulls, so I have no opinion on the dogs. I know that when I walk my dachshunds at the park, I give the pit bulls a wide berth. Any dog might try to attack, but I think I could handle a lab, say, or a collie, with my pepper spray and my feet. A pit bull, though, I'd need my 239. Thus the wide berth.

It might be that shitzus go berserk and attack people far more often than pit bulls. That could be possible. But the result would be nipped ankles, bitten fingers. Just look at the pit bull's teeth, jaws, neck. If it attacks a person, the results will be bad.

What a horrible way for this poor girl to go, mauled by her own dogs.... Frown

Feel free not to own one. I've owned a few pits in my time and they have been great.

And you'll excuse me, but I'll never in a million years trust my 19 month old daughter to be in the same room as a pitbull regardless if I'm there or not. Not in a million years.

My golf buddy and his family have couple of pits. They're sweet and well socialized but I don't trust them at all. On the other hand my other golf buddy and his family own a black lab (Cesar) that we take care of at our house when they're going out of town. Cesar loves to hang with my whole family, wife, kids, grand kids, and their dogs. I would never let the pits in my house or around my family or their pets. EVER.

Agree. And totally unworthy of the 2A / Gun Ownership comparison some owners use.

With so many less-aggressive breeds out there - that weren't bred for fighting - I have no idea why someone would want a pit bull.

Just a day before this happened I am sure this lady would have talked on-and-on about how happy and peaceful /loving her dogs are. Now she's dead ripped apart by her pets.

+1000

I'll guarantee you that you will have the same attitude when she's 16, 17, 18, ... There's little upside and a huge downside to trusting a fighting breed.
