This new minimum wage only applies to fast food? So the house keeper, janitor or security guard will make less?

Is there any reason they picked fast food and not a flat minimum wage increase?

The upside is mom/pop shops with less than 60 locations now have a competitive advantage
Unintended consequences may actually be a positive for some

It would be interesting to know exactly WHICH positions may pay "up to" $20/hr. I doubt VERY seriously it will be the french fry guy or gal. Just sayin'...

And in today's news.....

https://finance.yahoo.com/news...hisee-163000954.html

'A devastating financial blow': California's so-called 'draconian' fast-food bill is now law — why a McDonald's franchisee group says it'll cost small business owners $250K a year

California Governor Gavin Newsom smiled as he delivered the news amid a throng of cheering workers and labor leaders. The Democratic leader had just signed into law a bill to increase wages for fast-food workers across the state.

The new AB 1228 legislation, or the Fast Food Franchisor Responsibility Act, will give fast-food employees in California the highest guaranteed base pay in the industry nationwide.

“This is a big deal,” Newsom exclaimed during a press conference in Los Angeles on Sept. 28. “What a remarkable moment.”

I'm gonna LOVE seeing his "remarkable moment" when either every McDonald's shuts down or replaces living humanoids with robotics. I will laugh, and laugh, and laugh my ass off!!!

FHATHHRIO....

These people just don't think things through. One thing to be sure of at the very least, in the interim , EVERYONE affected by this will raise their prices. Then begins the competitiveness spiral...

My guess is because it's a potentially large voting pool. It's the only reason why politicians do things.

Optics, ease of enforcement, lots of money at those employers to fine and collect for non compliance.

Newsom is working for higher political office, putting the black female lesbian in Feinstein's place and she's not even a resident or registered voter in CA, all this is about building the base up for a bigger run in politics, guns, lesbians, wages, the Democrat Trifecta....

Rapid population increase causing 2 undesirable effects. One is price inflation due to increased demand for food, energy, housing, etc etc. the other effect is wage decreases because of an oversupply of labor.

California is even worse because they have had decades of increasing numbers of low earning potential population via illegal immigration. Many make zero attempt to learn English or assimilate, din't have the skills to advance, and will remain in low wage jobs, competing with thousands of others.

Pumping up the minimum wage artificially attempts to counteract the wage lowering effect of illegal immigration, but will only exacerbate the other effect of inflation.

Leftists really do destroy everything they touch.

Oh, it's coming, SEIU is a major political donor, right up there with Teacher's Union and Nurses Union in terms of donations = access

The Dems have managed to destroy domestic manufacturing at all levels, leaving the only occupations for low-skilled workers being jobs in fast-food work, housekeeping/domestic, warehousing, ditch digging or, 'security'. Such jobs used to be temporary work, thus high turn-over, seasonal or entry-level/first job for teenagers; the last twenty years these jobs are firmly in the realm of low-skilled adult.

Stupid me. I did it for $1.35/hr in 1971. But I got .05 commission for every quart of oil I sold.

When I was in high school, the only adults at the local MacD's were the manager and assistant manager, everyone else was a teenager. No one even considered that you could support a family frying burgers.

For me, this brings up a couple thoughts:

First, if minimum wage is $16.60/hour, what about existing employees that have earned merit raises during their employment? For example, a kid is making $17.60/hour because he is a 'shift-lead.' Will he be raised to $20, or to $21/hour? And manager and assistant managers? Either they would have to be paid more, commensurate with their positions, or you would have these employees say 'to hell with being a manager or lead person if I get paid the same,' and just go back to being an irresponsible basepay worker.

And, I wonder how the legislation is worded. MxDonald's bakes their own bread...just not on site. They own bakeries around the country that supply the stores. So, do they get a pass as well? And how about, say, Taco Bell? Perhaps they will start baking bread too, just for the pass, even though they don't sell bread? Perhaps McDonald's starts baking more, and acts as a supplier to their competitors. They will be saving so much, they could sell the bread at cost! (but they won't)

Then, the big conglomerates buy out bakeries and eliminate more businesses!

Why in the name of Zeuss's butthole did fast-food workers become such a special bunch of snowflakes deserving of special minimum wages? Just looked up the average starting salary of an EMT in California, it's $21.85/hour.

So how is it that flipping burgers is considered to be worth almost as much as saving lives?

I know what you're getting at and I don't have the answer. Except, we know the prices for the food will have to increase and as the price increase, the volume will go down thus compounding the problem.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
