I used to work for the Pabst distributor for Oakland County, Mi. When I started there Pabst had already gone way down the list of preferred beer. They tell me at one time it was right up there with Bud and Miller. I always liked it and grew up drinking it in the UP of Michigan in my misspent youth.

I drink PBR quite regularly. Usually when I’m not looking for something heavy like on the golf course.

PBR was never a bad beer. You want bad, that would be Schaefer and Falstaff. Then there's the watery tasteless stuff like Old Milwaukee and Keystone. My tastes and circumstances (I drink less than I used to) have changed and I prefer Yuengling these days.

I had a PBR recently as everything that wasn’t an IPA was out of stock. I’ll never be man enough to drink IPAs.
It’s been 20+ years but it had the exact same taste from what I remember. Not great but I would do it again.

IPA is a very broad category, with dozens of different types and styles and hundreds of different brands and brew within that vary greatly in flavor. (That's like saying "I'll never be man enough to drink wine" because you've had a couple different wines before and didn't like them. Or like the people who tried a sip of their dad's Natty Light one time, and then decided they "didn't like beer" for the rest of their lives.)

I guarantee that there is some style and brand of IPA out there that you would like, unless you straight up don't like beer at all.

IPAs developed a bad rap over the prior few decades, thanks to a bunch of hop-head microbrewers and craft brewers trying to "out-hop" each other by turning out droves of intentionally ridiculously skunky/bitter IPAs. (Or by fucking up their experimental brews through inexperience and trying to cover it up with excessive hops to try and salvage it.) Now many folks have come to assume all IPAs taste like used Pine Sol mop water mixed with rotten grass clippings.

Not surprisingly, that wave of overhopped swamp water IPAs didn't sell well outside of a small niche of beer drinkers, so now there's a whole new generation of brewers trying hard to undo that damage to the IPA's reputation, and turning out quite a few very tasty IPAs that are not bitter, which not surprisingly are much more successful and are becoming increasingly popular even amongst those who thought they "didn't like IPAs".

For example, the newer New England IPA, Cosmic IPA, and Hazy IPA styles typically utilize hops that impart a fruity/citrusy flavor, rather than bitter. Or there are traditional IPAs where the brewer takes extra care to balance out the bitterness of the hops with maltiness, resulting in a more neutral finish.

Next time you're at a place with a large selection of craft beer on tap, talk to the bartender about non-bitter IPAs, and see if you can try some samples of a few different ones. You'd be surprised.

I haven't heard that brand since 1992. My best friends grandfather had a couple cases in his basement at all times and we'd raid it after a night out and finish the night off with a couple Schlitz's.

I fondly remember saying "i'm schilitzed dude." a few times :P

My dad worked the majority of his life for breweries in the Detroit area, Pfeiffer,Goebel, E&B. And later as the breweries went to independent distributors the last one he worked for was a Pfeiffer and Budweiser combination through 1965.

Only A-B product he’d drink was Michelob. Always remember Pfeiffer only in the house.

Growing up I always heard that PBR and Schlitz were rough tasting beers. If I could not afford something else, I didn’t drink. Never tasted either one.

Somebody fed you a line of crap and you bought it. Personal taste preferences vary, and some folks will prefer the taste of other beers to PBR or Schlitz, but neither are “rough”.

I stopped by the VFW on Veteran's Day and the PBR was gone. The bartender told me one old timer was the main customer and after he passed on, they didn't sell enough.

The current "economy" beer is Busch Light.

I bought a 24 oz PBR, tried it for the first time in my life about two weeks ago. It was more than adequate for what it is, and a great replacement for AB.

Now I'm told that PBR on tap is even better still, will def try that soon.

Ah, Schlitz. When I was married and living in Florida, I would pick up a few quarts of Schlitz Beer to drink when my wife would drag me to see a Doris Day movie at local drive inn.

Bring smashed on beer was the ONLY way I could sit thru a Doris Day - Rock Hudson movie.

Excellent. Ha !!

Well crap. Has PBR changed much over the years? I could still check it out.

Whatever that means. Confused

I wanted some beer today and actually looked for PBR, but the particular store didn't have it.

Since buttweiser had their marketing snafu, we keep PBR in the fridge to offer our guests. I am up for drinking a beer a day, to help keep the kidney stones away...and PBR is one of a few brands I keep in the fridge.
