I believe you're referring to Andeker, Pabst's dark lager. It was an excellent beer, and a dominant market leader of its era, you can still see "Andeker" bar signage hanging on old neighborhood taverns in and around Milwaukee. It was our standard "working man's beer" out at the lake compound, a lovely spacer between jobs from the porch keg refrigerator. But as you note, alas, it is no longer brewed.

Andeker wasn't a dark lager. It was a helles lager, which is a pale light lager. Helles lagers are kind of like a German-style pilsner with a bit less hops. Pabst Special Dark was their dark lager.

Pabst is a fine easy drinking American Lager, lower ABV at 4.8%, and obviously a staple here in Milwaukee. No one thinks its a "great" beer, but it is a consistent and accessible brew, one of the best in its category. The formula has never changed, at least in modern times and under different owners, to the best of my recollection. Pabst is now owned by a marketing company, in effect. They purchased a ton of legacy brands, many no longer brewed at the time, some revived, some still dormant. Think G. Heileman's Old Style, Blatz, Olympia, Rainier, Schlitz (YES, Shlitz!), Schaeffer, Schmidt and Strohs. Wiki can show you more. As with all their brands currently brewed, its done by contract brewers, with Miller/InBev or whoever owns our other local flagship, brewing Pabst. Our first Pabst half barrel of the season was tapped on the lake porch yesterday, and one will remain active in the summer cottage nearly up to the deer hunt. As noted previously, its the perfect solution for family men passing time between projects on the property. Recently, Pabst became available only in half barrels, and due to the relatively auto inaccessible nature of the cottage, down on the lake shore, we tested out some other more full bodied quarter barrels briefly. Lets just say that production out there took a nose dive. So back to Pabst, and more planning to get the unwieldy half barrels down the hill and on the porch. Thanks for that correction, Rogue. Quick research shows the same, curious about my memory on the topic and dug a bit more. I presume it likely stopped brewing at the hostile takeover sale time in 1985/6. I was not of legal age yet, and likely not buying the product, maybe glossed over that not insignificant Helles v. Dark difference. I see they did brew Andeker again this century, if only briefly, at the Pabst Pilot Brewery, which was in the church on the grounds of the former Pabst Brewery here in Milwaukee. I missed that opportunity, unfortunately.

My uncle was a Pabst distributor for a long time, I remember when I was a (kid) 16 or so years of age that even then it tasted like ass, of course we got free Pabst by the cases then. Now I don’t think it tastes all that bad. It must have been pretty bad for a 16 yr old in late 70s to not want to take any of his dads supply

Last day of school. The insanity is over, at least for a while. Setting on the porch right now enjoying a nice cold can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. It's been a goto "cheap" beer for a while. I have always thought it was better then Bud or Miller. It's also a great beer for cooking, so I almost always have some on hand. I'm going to kick back and relax, enjoy a couple of cans of PBR, look back on a tough year and hope for a better school year next around. ARman

My first PBRs were a couple decades ago at an Ocracoke Island bar, on $1 PBR night, with my wife and my sister and her husband. It wasn’t bad, and in fact, this thread may make me go out and buy some. It doesn’t hold a candle to my local favorite, Red Oak, but it isn’t any worse than drinking Bud Light, even before their woke screwups.

Until a year or so ago I drank Stiegl Gold, a lager imported from Austria. It was expensive, but the best beer I’ve ever tasted. Unfortunately, the store that sold it closed because the mall it was located in was slated for demolition and reconstruction. I wasn’t able to find another local source for Stiegl, so I began sampling other lagers, including Sam Adams, Kirin, Sapporo, Pilsner Urquell, Modelo, and others. And, by George, I liked Pabst Blue Ribbon best of all. It’s inexpensive too. Nice, but I buy it for its good flavor, rather than its low price – a true bargain. I’ve been drinking PBR for six months now, and its appeal hasn’t faded. I dislike IPA and “craft” beers, nearly all of which are ales. Ales brew in half the time of lagers, and don’t require expensive refrigeration, so much lower capital cost to make. But ales require massive doses of hops to give them a semblance of beer flavor. I do enjoy an occasional stout. Serious about crackers

I recently had my first PBR, I like it. Its cheaper than many other beers at my local HEB so that certainly helps keep it in my fridge. HK Ag

I haven't had a drink in over 42 years, but I still recall the last PBR I drank. It was that fucking bad. Nice is overrated "It's every freedom-loving individual's duty to lie to the government." Airsoftguy, June 29, 2018
