Congress put it in the 2021 Infrastructure Bill: By 2027 every new vehicle must have AI cameras constantly watching the driver’s face and eyes.

If the system decides you’re “impaired,” it can shut your engine off. No override. No appeal.

What they should do instead of forcing every new vehicle buyer to pay for this bullshit..make a federal crime to drive distracted. Get caught looking down at a phone, go to jail. Mass revenue for local PD’s. 3 strikes = felony. Make it as severe as DUI.

I don't suppose anybody thought to include some provision for getting the car safely off the road. Roll Eyes Perhaps there's more beneath the surface. Just arbitrarily shutting an engine off at any old time and place is dangerous.

One of my current cars sometimes thinks I need a rest break, based on criteria that are impossible to determine.

Gonna need to see marked improvements to the tech before anything like this ever happened.

Either it won’t happen or the computer can be jacked to override it or spoof it. Given the rate that new vehicles are experiencing issues at a far higher rate than ever before and big brother features are being implemented in new cars, manufacturers would be shooting themselves in the foot on new car buyers.

Even now, the used car market is king compared to new, doubling rates of purchase over new… nonsense like this will not help new sales ratios.

The capability is already in Ford (Blue Cruise), Chevy (Super Cruise), Tesla, Subaru, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volvo. It is contained to the car and is localized to "nag mode" but expanding it to incorporate AI wouldn't be a stretch. After all, it's for our own good.

The more automation in cars, the more I want to keep my 2011 Honda Pilot.

Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

Great question.

Should be able to disable that in your settings.

Actually you can in my car, and all it does is turn off all the automatic driving do-dads if it thinks you're not paying attention - which most everyone here would apparently turn off anyway. Much ado about nothing. One thing it DOES do is if you are completely unresponsive (medical emergency, fall asleep) is it automatically pulls over to the side of the road (giving you plenty of warning ahead of time), avoiding traffic, and stops the car and calls 911. Say that's not a good thing. All you have to do to avoid that is be driving the car normally. It doesn't magically snatch the wheel out of your hands and take over the car. Implementation as discussed in the X/YT (which appears to be hysteria) bad idea.
