I've routinely hit 55-60 mph descending some of the 10%+ grades in Park City and the surrounding areas. I have one such descent on video in fact.

I have a real hard time believing a cyclist ever hit anywhere near 100mph in any professional bike race. In any case, 120kph is about 75mph, not 100mph.

This is from 2012.

Long ago, when I was riding a lot, I could get to my buddy's house by bike, about six miles south and three miles east, faster by bike than I could by car.

I'm trying to recall my best speeds... it was a while ago. I think I was regularly hitting 30+ MPH on flat stretches and I think my personal fastest was something in excess of 45 MPH downhill. My best sustained cruising speed on level ground was... 27 MPH, IIRC?

Another day of crashes. At this point I'd say over half the peloton has hit the deck at least once already.

Geraint Thomas went down and separated his shoulder with over 85 miles still to race. He had the doctor pop it back into place, got back on the bike, and finished the stage. Unfortunately he will not be starting tomorrow. The pain at this point must be too much to bear. ETA: Seems i had bad info. Geraint Thomas has not abandoned the race. So that's a piece of good news.

Primoz Roglic also had a nasty crash landing right on his hip. His cycling kit was shredded. He finished though and looks to be continuing tomorrow.

Caleb Ewan crashed in the final sprint and broke his collar bone. Most likely he'll pull out of the race. That's a shame.

Only the third day. Crazy race so far.

Cavendish!!!!

Brilliant win. I was rooting for Van Moer to pull off the win after being in the breakaway the entire race, but that ending was awesome.

They got that moron with the sign who caused that huge horrific crash!

She needs hard prison time for that:

Tour de France surgeon Gilbert Versier (right) likened the chaos caused in the crash to a 'war zone' such as Afghanistan or Iraq. Big Grin

Even though the listed punishments sound harsh, she's going to be the example the racing group, riders and France use to stop future fans from crowding the riders or pushing signs out onto the course in their path.

Imagine she hid for 4 days not from the cops as much as the fans who might cause her harm.

You don’t get PTSD from a bike crash like that. To say something so silly and stupid should invite nothing but an ungodly amount of ridicule.

Being in a war zone for prolonged amounts of time and crashing a bike are not even almost close to being equal.

May I suggest a second helmet and one of those inflatable sumo wrestler costumes for all riders next year?

Thanks. Every time I hear PTSD used in such a manner it irks me. It is a distinct slap in the face for veterans who have faced life and death situations on a daily basis.

How does the bubble vent two stroke exhaust? I tried it and kept getting light headed and really bad headaches. Sadly I had to abandon the bubble as an extra form of safety gear. It seemed so promising at first. Razz Big Grin

When looking at the replay of the crash, the guy that hit the sign appears to be looking right at it and went on into the sign and did nothing to avoid it.

PTSD is a real thing. My father had it after the WW II combat that he came away from with three Purple Heart medals and seeing his best friend killed in a foxhole beside him. I had a few of the common symptoms for a time after leaving Vietnam, but it never interfered with my life and I’ve never thought they were anything more than what are experienced by countless other combat veterans. Unfortunately, though, it’s become the disorder du jour that can be claimed by anyone for practically anything these days.

A couple of recent claims really stick with me. One was by a former fire department chief who claimed he had PTSD from being involved in the response to a major wildland fire.
Another was a police officer who said he got it because he was on duty when an officer in another agency had a heart attack.
Yeah, those experiences are almost the same as being blown off a landing craft by the near miss of an artillery shell during an amphibious invasion. So, falling off a bicycle? Why not? Roll Eyes

HRK, Target fixation?

The Isle of Man TT is canceled this year but it’s organizers stated that they’ll be using this time to do everything they can to make the event better next year for fans. I can only assume they saw this and will be making extra efforts to make sure it doesn’t happen there. Or maybe they already have done something like this in the past? I was researching it and was shocked at the amount of spectators who have been injured or killed watching that event.

How could he have avoided it?
Can't go left, you've got riders nearly handle bar-to-handlebar; can't stop, you got 100+ riders right behind you; can't go right, you end up hitting spectators, in the ditch or, dealing with uneven pavement. He's looking at it knowing his only option is to go through, she steps onto the road and into the path of the riders, likely hitting shoulders with the first cyclist.

She screwed up, not criminal but, get slapped with a fine, maybe some community service for being a nuisance and endure the ridicule from your fellow citizens for the rest of your life. The breathless, hyperbolic quotes from 'officials' are nearly as aggravating as the stupidity of this fan.

Not trying to say he has any place to go, just surprised he didn't move one bit, try to duck, move left or right, use his hand to move it, or punch her in the head just rode straight into the sign as if it wasn't there.

She's clearly not very bright and fully the cause.

Stickman, that's what I was thinking, looking right at it and locked in....
