If you know any pilots, a lot of us carry portable CO2 monitors. You can also gain another piece of the puzzle by doing a pulseoximeter reading. A lot of pilots, emt's, and just preparedness people have them.

Get some electrolytes in you. We just went through this at my house. It’s a misery, but you’ll come through, and more quickly with the right support.

This is correct…..pulse oximetry measures the percentage of hemoglobin on the red blood cells that have something bound to them….the common misperception is that it’s measuring percentage of oxygen on the hemoglobin…. Which under normal circumstances would be accurate….but carbon monoxide binds much more readily and the pulse oximeter doesn’t differentiate. I’ve had smoke inhalation patients from building fires with very high levels of CO and the pulse oximeter reading 100%……. There is a meter, similar to the pulse oximeter that uses something called “rainbow technology” as it’s called by the manufacturer….that measures specifically carbon monoxide. We have one on our Rescue truck….time and time again our readings are confirmed by bloodwork at the hospital.

It used to be thought most firefighter fatalities absent of trauma and just running out of air was the result of carbon monoxide…..not the case ….. in a house fire with common modern combustibles today, there is a significant amount of hydrogen cyanide present….we have a meter for that too which we use to confirm our atmosphere inside is clear before allowing my guys to take off air supply during overhaul operations which is the worst time for deadly concentrations of all the bad shit.

Had a firefight buddy swing by and he gave the house the all-clear regarding co2.

The entire family of one of my daughters (3 kids just a bit younger than yours) went through this and are now on the mend. A slow recovery but they are doing much, much better.

Aside from fever, what were the symptoms?

Going out on a limb, I’ll guess projectile vomit.

I think we’ll be heading into the doctor today for at least 3 of us. The 4 year old spiked a 104 fever overnight (she’s been sick the longest), the 9 year old is having terrible throat pain, and I’m fairly certain I’ve shifted into bronchitis or pneumonia.

Overall symptom list for the whole “fam damily” (as my mom would say)
- high fevers
- vomiting (younger kids)
- nausea
- head aches
- sore throats
- coughing
- lethargy
- body aches
- chest pain (me, when coughing)
- trouble breathing (me, new development)

Bringing the 9 year old back to the doc today. I think she’s also developed bronchitis or maybe pneumonia. Her fever spiked last night to 105 after having been pretty decent over the weekend. We were able to get it under the control without having to go to ER, but nobody likes seeing 105.

Few things worse than watching your kids suffer that degree of illness. Hope everyone is on the mend very, very soon.
