That's not entirely correct. The national park on the Outer Banks of NC is still open to use, but the museums and visitor centers are closed. You can drive or walk on the beach, pick up shells, fish, watch birds, etc., all the things you can do when the park is open.

This is in stark contrast to the NPS shut downs during the Obama era, which were intended to be as painful as possible to the visiting public. The beach accesses were block then, and private businesses which needed park access were also forced to close. In some of the western parks the NPS even closed the shoulders of state owned roads so you could not look into the park. Obama wanted it to hurt.

Indeed he did, and this shutdown is in stark contrast to that.

A piece on the local news last night dealt with the shutdown of both Glacier and Yellowstone. They're still open. The public can still go there and access anything they could before. There's just nobody staffing the entrances or anything that the government runs. All of the vendors remain open.

I was informed last week that I was being recalled to active duty starting Jan 07.

Well, I am in a hold pattern since I cannot get orders to give to my employer in Charlotte, go get a current military ID, arrange base housing or any billeting etc..

Just craziness...

Slight difference in approach. One pResident wanted to push the power of the state. One President appears to love the country and the people more than the state. I’d call it a major upgrade.

Here's an interesting affect of the shutdown that I had not considered. If it goes on long enough food stamps may be cut off.

Admittedly this comes from Zero Hedge, which is always end of the world doom and gloom, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. But it's always good to pay some attention to these things, and seems like it could be a good time to bump the "Today I cleaned my rifle" thread.

quote:

According to the Department of Agriculture, if this government shutdown stretches into February there won’t be money for food stamps. And it certainly looks like this shutdown could last for quite a while, because President Trump is not backing down on his demand for border wall funding, and the Democrats have pledged not to give him a single penny.

So a few weeks from now, approximately 38 million people could be suddenly cut off from the food stamp program. If that scenario were to unfold, there is no telling what could happen. After just a few days, government workers are already freaking out about having their paychecks delayed.

If people are getting this restless already, what will things look like when tens of millions of Americans are suddenly cut off from their primary source of food money?

Dang, they might have to forego buying smokes at $5+/pack and lottery tickets.

Maybe people will come to find out that we just don't need the government, or at least not as much government as we continue to fund....
We need a wall. Keep it shut down until we get a wall.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
