• Eldridge Cleaver: Minister of Information for the Black Panther Party, author of the radical Soul on Ice, and a revolutionary Marxist who fled the U.S. into exile (Cuba, Algeria, etc.). After firsthand exposure to Communist regimes, he returned in the 1970s, became a born-again Christian, supported Reagan, ran as a Republican, and adopted conservative positions (anti-Communist, pro-law-and-order, critical of the left’s approach to race and welfare). 

• Frank S. Meyer: Communist Party organizer and activist in the 1930s (involved with the party in Britain and the U.S.). He later developed “fusionism” (uniting traditional conservatism and libertarianism), became a key National Review editor, and helped define postwar American conservatism. 

• Max Eastman: Prominent early-20th-century socialist, editor of radical magazines like The Masses and The Liberator, and initial supporter of the Bolshevik Revolution. After living in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and witnessing Stalinism, he rejected Marxism/socialism, became a strong anti-Communist free-market advocate, wrote for Reader’s Digest and National Review, and published Reflections on the Failure of Socialism. 

• Jay Lovestone: Early leader and general secretary of the Communist Party USA in the 1920s. After clashing with Stalin (over “American exceptionalism”) and being expelled, he eventually became a major anti-Communist, working with the AFL-CIO and U.S. intelligence against Communist influence in labor movements worldwide.
