It's a nice theory.
Him being cuffed and put in the car proves otherwise.

No...all it proves it that they violated his rights and committed an illegal seizure of his person. They had no probable cause and not even a reasonable articulable suspicion.

Agree 100% with tleo.

The police have NO RIGHT to ask you for ID if they are not suspecting you of a crime. If they are "Detaining" him, they can.

What "crime" was he being suspected of?

They are united for the most part. There are as many "civilians" who support this type of nonsense, as there are police officers enforcing it. Look around the big COVID thread if you need proof. If it saves one life.

All it proves is that they had a bigger stick and more willingness to swing it than him, not that they were right. The Police have already admitted the overreach in their apology, and there will probably be a very expensive lawsuit in the near future that will only hurt the taxpayer, not the officers or policy makers responsible.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

He could have just left the park.

I guess in your country it is OK for police to just walk up to a person doing nothing wrong and demand ID!

Fortunately, this is still the United States of America and we still have some rights. Including protection from police using illegal tactics/actions.

Between real criminals, politicians, and cops I'm not sure which is the biggest threat to my quality of life anymore.
Criminals are the easiest to mitigate as their motives are clear and you can actively take measures to avoid or dissuade them.
Politicians make bad laws and their police departments enforce those bad laws.
That one is a lot harder to get around when you only want to live your life and be left alone.

What charges would I be looking at as a civilian if I grabbed some lady at random, handcuffed her and stuck her in my car for a little while, then finally let her run away with a little apology?

Yep, by not showing his ID he was interfering with the police doing their duty.
(even if their duty was the only crime being committed)

It's a shame what we've come to. Frown

This! Reminds me of what took place in Germany in the late 1930s/1940s.

Nonessential to whom? As far as I'm concerned it's essential if the people doing it have determined it to be such.

None of us are under house arrest. If someone needs some home improvement stuff to ease the boredom or relieve stress, have at it. Same with going to the park with family, going on a motorcycle ride or drive, flying, or whatever other activities one can partake in while mostly avoiding others outside the family group.

Regardless what you think of this story, there are going to be an increasing number of these stories popping up as this forced quarantine continues. Hell, I have three neighbors who have each told me that if this quarantine is not lifted by next week, they'll be ignoring it and going back to work (each is an independent contractor in a non-essential sector). Given who these guys are, I take them at their word.

Things are going to get really messy if this forced quarantine is not lifted very soon.
