Zero calorie soda? Login/Join

In my on-going weight maintenance effort I’ve replaced some of my evening adult beverage consumption with zero calorie soda.

I hadn’t consumed any soda for years, so had to try many to find one I liked. Coke Zero was pretty good, but since I’m drinking the soda in the evening I want a no-caffeine choice. Most of the others had artificial berry flavors that were initially tasty, but soon got tiresome.

The one I’ve settled on is Vernor’s zero calorie ginger ale. It’s light, pleasant flavor stands the test of time. For me, at least.

Other suggestions?

In warm weather I like the citrus seltzers, such as La Croix. Orange or lemon are my favorites.
I drink much less in cold weather.

You can actually get vanilla Coke zero.
My wife likes the Zevia drinks. Many flavors, and they are sweetened with all natural Stevia, no sugar, 0 calories, many are caffeine free but some have a small amount of caffeine. Another bonus, they are clear colored so if one of the kiddos spills it, less worry about stains. I’d recommend drinking it out of the can, as it is a bit weird when you pour out the drink into a glass with ice, and it’s clear. It kind of messes with your head regarding the flavor you’re expecting.

Diet A&W Root Beer. Rootbeer doesn’t have caffeine to begin with and the diet tastes very much like the non diet. I keep meaning to try diet 7up to see how it tastes.

Maybe a slight thread drift...

I’m on a weight loss program.

I’m cutting wayyyyyy back on diet sodas.

I’ve discovered I like iced tea, or water, with a slice of Orange. I now prefer Orange over a lemon slice.

Try using a slice of lime to flavor up your drink.

I make a “mocktail” consisting of 3 parts sparkling water, 1 part very low calorie cranberry juice, and a slice of lime.

Good luck you, best wishes.

Zevia black cherry and grape were tasty, but suffered the “soon got tiresome” effect for me.

If you were off soda altogether then why start? Artificial sweeteners just make you crave real sugar. I would recommend soda water with some fresh lime juice if you want to replace evening cocktails. Even the pre flavored seltzers will do. But fresh lemon or lime and you won’t miss the sweetness.

These go to eleven.

Diet Dr. Pepper is my go-to.

If you don't want artificial sweeteners like Splenda, saccharin, or aspartame, try some of the soda waters.

Waterloo is better than La Croix IMHO.

10 Reasons To Give Up Diet Soda

Artificial sweeteners have more intense flavor than real sugar, so over time products like diet soda dull our senses to naturally sweet foods like fruit, says Brooke Alpert, RD, author of The Sugar Detox. Even more troubling, these sugar stand-ins have been shown to have the same effect on your body as sugar. "Artificial sweeteners trigger insulin, which sends your body into fat storage mode and leads to weight gain," Alpert says.

I like San Pellegrino sparkling water as a no cal drink. I think it has a better flavor than Perrier but I'll take a Perrier in a pinch. I usually drink it as is but sometimes put a lemon slice in my glass. You can add a squirt of your favorite flavorings if you like. The little flavor pods are pretty much cal free. The preflavored Pellegrino has over 100 cals so I avoid those. The La Croix plain is on the bitter side, but the flavored ones are not too bad and cal free.

As to cokes et al, I used to worry about the caffeine, but I never felt a "buzz" from a coke like I do from a cup of coffee so I just disregard that. I kinda like the Diet Coke Ginger/Lime. In the tall skinny cans. Not quite as sweet as regular diet Coke.

I tried that stuff once. I had to lick my ass to get the taste out of my mouth.

Yes. Diet Dr. Pepper tastes the closest to the original than any diet drinks I’ve had.

I switched from coke zero to seltzer a few years ago and it's made a huge difference in my health.

It takes some time to detox from sweeteners and get your taste buds back. Once that happens, drinking flavored seltzer gets way way better.

Does it have to be soda? The flavored water Propel has zero calories plus vitamins B6 and C. I can't make out what they use for flavorings, which have twenty-letter words in them. Here, I get it (when on sale) for about $6 a 12-pack of half-liter bottles.
