Can't they afford cars? Time to change. Too dangerous in the big cities.

My son (Neurologist) rides his bicycle or motorcycle to the hospital most days, he saves about 30 minutes each way in his trip to the hospital compared to taking a car and parking is easier. Riding the bike gives him some exercise as well. That hour a day for him is worth the risk, although his family disagrees.

He was actually an interventional cardiologists. This means he did interventional procedures in the Cath lab. These procedures are sometimes referred to as surgery although they are not open surgery where the chest is cracked open and the heart exposed. This involves intruding various wires, balloons and devices through the vascular system to clear blockages, repair valves, etc....

A manhunt continues today for the suspected killer who allegedly harbored a 20-year grudge against a prominent Houston physician before gunning him down in broad daylight in the Texas Medical Center.

Houston police are searching for former deputy constable Joseph James Pappas, 62, who is considered to be armed, dangerous and suicidal

A surveillance video showing the suspect moments after the killing broke the case, when a tipster alerted police to a possible connection to Pappas.

Police searched his home in Westbury on Wednesday, but he wasn’t found there. He hasn’t been seen in almost two days, according to police.

More information is being discovered about Pappas, who worked in Harris County law enforcement for roughly three decades up until about five years ago. From 1997 to 2013, he served as a reserve officer with Harris County Constable Precinct 2, after a number of years on the force there and at Precinct 7.

Pappas also had an active real estate license with a business address on Westheimer.

Five days after Hausknecht died, a man using the same phone number as Pappas tried to sell a stash of weapons, ammunition and tactical vests online. Police searched his Westbury home early Wednesday and found a gun and several holsters, although he’d already given away many of his belongings, according to sources close to the investigation.

I don't think he will live to see justice. If LE catches up with him, it'll be suicide by cop.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he has already killed himself.

Constables and their deputies are law enforcement officers in Texas. (Similar to Sheriffs and their deputies.)

So yes, he was a cop.

Yep. Even at work where it is against state law to carry within a hospital.

The man accused of gunning down a prominent Houston doctor transferred the deed to his home the day before the death, according to the Harris County Clerk.

Clerk records show that Joseph James Pappas, who is wanted in the death of cardiologist Mark Hausknecht, signed to convey his deed to an Ohio woman on July 19. The deed transfer was officially delivered on July 23.

Joe Donaldson, who owns the courier service that picked up the documents from Pappas, said the man displayed strange behavior throughout the transaction.

Pappas called Donaldson’s company, Legal Express Texas, on July 19 to get the deed delivered, as originally reported by KPRC-2. The deed couldn’t be delivered that day, and Donaldson instead picked up the documents on Monday, July 23, Donaldson said.

“He was very nervous, opened the door a crack,” Donaldson said. “I thought ‘This was strange.’”

Afterward, Pappas called a number of times asking whether the documents had been filed.

“It’s not normal for people to be so antsy about transferring a property,” Donaldson said. “It just indicated he was premeditating this before it ever happened."

The manhunt for Pappas continues today

Reserve deputies are part time cops. Sometimes, it is sort of a hobby for them, like being a volunteer fireman. Others have a particular skill, and are called out as needed. I know a guy who is a diver and a reserve deputy. He often fishes dead people out of cars that crash into a bayou. But they are real cops.

According to the quoted section, it sounds like he was only a reserve for a bit over half of his career.

He supposedly worked for Harris County for "roughly three decades" in law enforcement.

It states he was a reserve officer for the Harris County Constable's Office from 1997-2013. That's 16 years of his roughly 30 years.

It also states that for "a number of years" prior to 1997, he was "on the force there", which I take to mean he was a full time Deputy Constable for 14ish years prior to 1997.

He's dead.

The man charged with murdering George H.W. Bush’s former cardiologist has committed suicide after being confronted by two members of the Houston Police department.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo declared "This is our suspect" at a press conference less than an hour after Joseph Pappas, 62, died near his home in Houston.

Acevedo explained that at 9:21 A.M., police received a call from an individual chasing a suspicious person. Four minutes later, the caller said he was near the Jewish Community Center and that he believed the suspicious person was Pappas. The caller found a wallet Pappas dropped with his ID in it.

When police arrived, the found Pappas was wearing body armor and he did not comply with officers' commands. When more officers closed in, Pappas shot himself in the head.

Acevedo said he was convinced there may have been a shootout with police had a second officer not arrived.

"You don't wear body armor when you're thinking of suicide," he said.

He added that police believe Pappas had been camping since he was identified as the suspect in Dr Mark Hausknecht's death. He was found with a backpack and a bullet proof vest under his shirt.

The confrontation with police came the day after Houston police searched and cleared his home after a neighbor alerted authorities when they saw an open gate and spotted someone resembling him. A light was also in inside the residence.

Police believed Pappas might have been seeking revenge for his mother who died on the operating table of Houston cardiologist Dr Mark Hausknecht more than 20 years ago.

Hausknecht was shot three times while riding his bike on July 20. Pappas, who was also riding a bike, rode past the doctor before turning around and pulling the trigger, according to police.

Pappas worked from 1983 through 1995 as a peace officer with two Houston-area constable offices. He also worked from 1995 through 2013 as a reserve officer for the same constable offices, according to records from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

Ever since Hausknecht was shot dead, Pappas appeared to have been putting his affairs in order.

An Ohio woman claimed he deeded his Houston home to her three days after the attack.

Jeanette Spencer, from Painseville, Oh., said she received notification in the mail from family friend Joseph James Pappas, 62, according to The News-Herald.

She claims that upon receiving the deed, which was executed in February 2017, but recorded July 23 at Harris County Courthouse, that she phoned him.

“I called him on the 24th and he said he had a terminal illness, and that’s why he deed (me) the house,” she said.

Spencer, who has known Pappas for 25 years, says she subsequently received a text message on July 30, the day one of her daughters was going to meet with him in Houston, claiming he was going to commit suicide.

“Sorry for handling this this way. House and property is now yours. Please make best use of it for you and (your daughter)”, the text read.

Upon receiving the text, Spencer phoned her daughter and the police.

She added that another of her daughters, who Pappas took under her wing when she lives in Houston, was aware he was angry with “a doctor” over his mother’s death but she did not know any more.

He also apparently tried to sell guns online days after carrying out the murder.

Five days after the killing, a stash of weapons — including two tactical vests, a .38-caliber revolver and ammunition — was listed for sale on a popular firearms website, the Houston Chronicle reported. The seller’s number was traced back to Pappas’ real estate company. It’s unclear if any of the weapons was used to kill Hausknecht.

President Bush was treated by Hausknecht in 2000 for an irregular heartbeat after he complained about lightheadedness. Bush paid tributed to him as a "fantastic cardiologist and a good man".

Yup...great news and saved the taxpayers a WHOOOOOOOOOOOLE LOT of money, but in addition, I would have liked to have heard he writhed in excruciating pain and suffered horribly for HOURS before dying.
