I never developed the taste for coffee until well into my 40's and even today, I'm an infrequent drinker. Most of the time, if I need a boost I'll turn to an espresso or, similar, usually a cortado. Coffee is already a diuretic, drinking several cups and running to the head, especially if I was doing a road trip just didn't jive with me so I'm not a pour-over or coffee kettle guy.

My go-to the last several years for home espresso has been Black Oak Roasters Duomo. My friend made a cortado and I've never looked back, this stuff was deep, smooth, strong notes but not bitter reminded me of my favorite coffee bar in Florence Italy.

Please advise where you are finding quality Costa Rican beans. Please!

As said earlier in this thread, local or mail order, domestic or international, the quality of Costa Rican I have purchased has gone down in recent years. Was hoping for a source that still provides great roasted whole beans.

Received an email from a member out of Montana who has a friend who runs a local roastery. Offered to send me some of his Costa Rican beans which he said were outstanding. This forum's members are truly exceptional and generous. My thanks to Lee! Merry Christmas. Big Grin

Will do Sir! Costa Rican (especially Tarrazu) has been my favorite for literally decades until recent times when the quality plummeted from my sources. I wondered if there simply has been a glut of bad crops in recent years.
And again thank you!

Sent you some interesting non-coffee related history by email. Wink

Good stuff. I got some from Costco, wanted to get more but now they only have it ground and I need whole bean as the pre ground is too fine for my Moccamaster.

I am now drinking San Francisco Bay French Roast from Costco. They had it on sale, $12.79 for 3lb bag. Very happy with it, bought 5 bags to make sure I have it for awhile.

I never found any I liked, so I order green coffee beans and roast them myself. That way you can adjust the roast level and bring out the differences in all types. I only use single origin beans.
Bearded Lady Ethopian coffee is a great tasting coffee and will order that when I do not have a lot of time.

I…. I spent years working on vanillas, and months working on salts - and I still test every vanilla and chocolate I can find on the market…

We make a great many of our inputs and flavorings, now, for quality reasons/are starting to grow our own fruit for the same reasons…

But I do that for a living.

I have monetized my OCD, yet even by my standards, some of y’all need to relax. Big Grin

Certain Costco locations also carry SF Bay's Colombian beans along with their French Roast

You're not concerned with it going stale?

That was my thought as well. It's likely been sitting in a SFB warehouse for a bit, then a Costco warehouse for a bit, then on the shelf at Costco for a bit. So it already has some age to it, likely to the tune of several months.

From there, how long will it take you to drink 15 pounds of coffee? I drink a higher than average amount of coffee (3-5+ cups each day), but that would take me about 7-8 months to go through 15 pounds at my usual consumption of ~2 pounds per month. Add that to the months it spent being processed/delivered/stored/sold, and I would be pushing a year post-roasting by the time I got to the final bags.

Roasted whole beans are best within a few weeks of roasting, and still decently good within a few months of roasting if kept sealed (either in the unopened bag or something like a sealed Airscape container). But you start pushing 6-12+ months, and even in a sealed bag, they're not going to be anywhere near as good as when they were fresh.

Personally, I'd rather pay a few bucks more for fresher coffee beans, rather than stocking up on large quantities of coffee on sale that will go stale.

I may have to try this. By chance is it offered in K cups?

"Anything dark roasted in bean form ground at use and brewed strong enough that you can't see the bottom of the cup".[/QUOTE]

I can't recall a time in my life that I didn't drink coffee.
I'm with you. Strong dark roast. If you can see through it it's not coffee

Right now I use Seattle's Best Post Alley #5. Make it strong. Good flavor not at all bitter.

I don’t buy into the “stale after two weeks” line that some folks tout. I’ve had beans over a year old when I ground them and coffee still tasted fine to me. Maybe not quite as good as fresh, but still plenty palatable.

This particular coffee doesn’t show the “Roasted On” date, but shows a “Best by” date of 22 Nov 24. My guess is it is a year out from roast date. I purchased it mid-December, so about a month to get on the shelf (well, pallet Wink )

That would be in line with other coffee I’ve looked at that had “Roasted on” dates of just under/over a month at Costco.

This particular coffee is in plastic vented bags, I store the unopened bags in the dark in the garage. I grind about 1 to 1.5 pounds at a time and once ground it goes in a stainless airtight canister.

I make 24 oz of coffee 6 or 7 days a week, 40 grams to 24 oz water. Roughly 6800 grams to 15 pounds means 170 pots or 24-28 weeks, about 6 months.

Received the generous Costa Rica coffee from Outfitter33. Had some this evening with dinner. Very smooth and with the distinctive notes (flavors) missing from what I have sourced in recent years. Again my thanks!

Peets update;

Found a retailer, they had about 3 shelves of 8 running
feet, mostly Major Dickerson.
Got some of that and a small bag of
something labeled Big Bang.

Just easing into 2nd cup this AM. We'll see.
