You don't need a big saw when you can use a Stihl 011 or 012. I have a Stihl 038 Super for cutting the tree up after it is on the ground. The 011 is light and cuts just as good as the 038 which is heavy. 41

A strong-willed man armed with a rope and pocket chainsaw verses a standing tree trunk. Add some building stormy weather and you have all the components of a Hemingway novel. May I suggest including some fine bourbon and a Cuban cigar into the mix. Seriously though...stay safe, best of luck and post some celebratory photos of your conquest.

My bet is that it will work - if the cutter doesn't get 'pinched' in the cut. However, be aware that VERY embarrassing situations can occur in operations of this nature. Case in point: Several years ago, I was attempting to break a dead limb off of an oak tree in my yard. As I did the "Parabellum" swing across the yard with my fat ass on the end of the rope, the following conversation with the wifey ensued: She: "Call the man" (referring to her brother) Me: "I got this - watch a Ford Bronco II kick ass" I tied the rope to the bumper hitch and gave it gas - immediately just spinning the back tires. She: "Call the man!", in her Andy Taylor brogue. ME: "I forgot to put it in 4 wheel - now watch!" Sure enough, I got full traction, moved forward, and immediately pulled the light rear-end of the little ford right off the ground! She: "I'll be right back!" Me: "I guess you are gonna call the man, huh?" She: "Heck no! I'm gonna go get the camera! This is gonna make a great Christmas card to send all our friends this year. (I immediately hit reverse, unhitched the mighty Bronco II and went to the man-cave to sulk - and called the man the next day.)

Have you considered having Mrs.Parabellum video your efforts? In the event gravity decides to throw you an amusing curveball, FailArmy will pay real money for that video. Upwards of $50, I think. Just make sure she shoots horizontally. There's nothing more annoying than vertical video. -Rob I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888 A=A

Wait, what? |
There a plethora of chain saw vids on the utube that make me physically cringe. Keep in mind that the rope is going to stretch, and the longer the rope, the more stretch. The more stretch, the more effort to saw back and forth and the longer it is going to take to git er done!

best of luck to you. My neighbor did the same thing with a pocket chain saw. He threw a rope up high and had a long section to pull on. It started to work ok but then the tree decided it had enough of his shenanigans and closed the saw kerf to permanently bind the saw to the tree. He couldn't move the saw because it was stick. Yeah, that's my concern- it's gonna get stick. All the weight above the cut will be bearing down, unlike cutting a limb, which would pull the cut open.
