I more or less idly clicked the video yesterday as one does in this jaded age. Just the video made me literally should "holy shit". Then the audio of the mayday played and I really wish I hadn't heard that. A terrible tragedy. I know very little about aviation. At 35k feet with light icing. -47 degrees Celsius. A little later reported precipitation. That would seem like a bad combination? "Practice like you want to play in the game"

Might piss some folks off, but the young lady was still transmitting at the end, doing her job. Though I can't blame the pilot for saying a prayer at the end, and there's no way to know what he was doing besides praying, I would prefer that a professional still be trying to work on the situation. All that said, good on her for getting her part of the job done. No idea how I would act in such a situation. Hopefully won't find out.

For some reason I watched the video with the audio of the radio transmission. I really wish I hadn’t. That young lady was in a situation that very few will be in and continued to do her job. Prayers and condolences to the families of all involved in this tragedy.

FAA - Thunderstorms— Don’t Flirt...Skirt ‘Em Excerpts:

| come and take it |
Reading comments around the internet the past 2 days it's a little shocking how many people think it's 70° high above Florida all the time. It's winter every single day on top of Mt. Everest at 29,000 feet. The jet's problems started at 35,000 feet. Yes, even in Florida the temperature is 50°F below Zero at 35,000. Throw a storm into the mix and.... In the last photo of the plane, or still shot taken from the video, the elevator is missing.

Yes, Juan talks about that at around 17:12 in his video. _________________________________________________________________________ “A man’s treatment of a dog is no indication of the man’s nature, but his treatment of a cat is. New Information: "Important pieces from the tail of the doomed Learjet that crashed Sunday in Florida, killing all 9 people on board, had already separated from the aircraft before it hit the ground, investigators said. The plane’s left elevator – a piece on the tail used to move it up and down – was found in three pieces in a range of around 1.3 to 3.8 miles from the accident site, National Transportation Safety Board spokesperson Thomas B. Chapman told a press conference Tuesday." https://nypost.com/2026/11/03/...st&utm_medium=social

It will be interesting to learn when the tail pieces separated, and under what conditions. Presumably high speed, maybe due to flutter at the high speed. At an extreme nose down angle and with the reported overspeed (meaning they weren't stalled or spinning), they must have reached a supersonic speed. In a normal airliner, which is not nearly as slick as a Lear, just 5 or 6 degrees nose down with engines at idle can get speeds close to the limits.

Aerodynamics slightly aside, the jet was likely unflyable with parts of the tail missing. Talk about icing or turbulence was likely all related to entering or being to close to the thunderstorm. Hence the real contributor was inadvertently flying into the storm. 8-20 minutes prior one needs a plan in place, climbing not an option. If the storm is ‘embedded’ in cloud cover, the radar is used. Another tool is an airborne weather image, even if 8 minutes old, still useful. With early information, the main error seems to be the flight(inadvertent) into the storm.

I read a report that said they were diving at a speed faster that the jet was rated for, so parts breaking off would be expected. ****************************************************************************** Never shoot a large caliber man with a small caliber bullet . . .

The curious thing is their last moment turn into the thunderstorm. They were successfully avoiding other cells but then turned into it. We'll never know exactly why, but it seems to be either a failure to adequately use their onboard radar, or they miscalculated that they had passed it already.

Ya, they went south of the massive thunderstorm. I don’t know how accurate the depictions are, but it looks like they turned right into the small cell. I’m fairly sure all that weather was moving WNW so turning right sooner to pass south of that small cell would have put them in clearer skies. If the CVR is recovered intact, then there might be some indication of what their decision making process was. What kind of picture does the on board radar paint?
