I'm on a few forums and only one does something similar, a pay it forward kind of thing.
But nothing like it is here.

I only frequent a couple of other gun boards and I've never seen what we call a "Karma" here on those. Once in a very great while someone will offer free an item that someone has been trying to find.

Member mark123 replicated the karmanator. Also the TubeIt thingy, if memory serves.

I've looked at a lot of different forums since I've been a member here and giveaways of any kind have been few and far between. I sure haven't seen anyone give a firearm away. I couldn't believe it the first time I saw someone do that on this forum. As far as forums go, it doesn't get any better than this.

A bit of confusion about karmas can arise for new members, since, unfortunately, the board software refers to your post count as "karma points." Each post is one "karma point." It's just a coincidence.

You are correct about the term being coined by RT. To answer your question I have never witnessed it on any other forum I participate on.

I think the membership behavior reflects the leadership. If the behavior is unique here, so is the leadership.

I'm still active on your old S&W Forum and there are some generous karmas there but I've never seen anything like the generosity of Sig Forum karmas. Smile

I made the attempt on another board to influence the practice, but to no avail. At the end of the day it is about culture; to “karma” is part of the unique culture of SigForum.

I belong to another gun forum where we have a couple of long running threads of Pay It Forward.

So it isn't so much a raffle, but an, "I have something I don't need, does anyone need it?" kind of thing. It's an on-going thread so things are being constantly given away.

There’s a local forum that does something similar, but nowhere to the degree I’ve seen here over the last decade. Not even close.

Let’s see, a random sampling tonight shows a wheelbarrow and another guy is giving away a dozen free cardboard boxes. Yep.

On the motorcycle forums I frequent members will offer up or respond to inquiries for spares as a "karma" either gratis or priced to cover shipping only. It also happens occasionally on some of the audio forums but... at nowhere near the frequency I've observed on this forum.

As one example back when 12131 was offering a P228 karma to SF members who "escaped from behind enemy lines" I was extremely impressed by his generosity and have yet to see its equal on another forum of any type. What this forum and its members offer is beyond just material items, the spirit here represents the core values of what makes this such a great country.

I spend too much time lurking here to know what's happening on other forums. That's not a complaint; that's a compliment.

I joined a CNC Machining Forum many years back but did not spend enough time there to know what the Members do. No other firearms Forums do I read. That said, I still feel like I was the first Member in Sig Forum givin a firearm by 12131, a beautiful Sig P227. And if unique is what the Members are here, the only place I've ever seen a vehicle givin away was on TV game shows. Perhaps tomorrow I can get help posting my beautiful mini van picture. My most precious belonging. For those who weren't here at that time, the Forums Owner and Membership helped me to get my mini van. I dont believe there is any group of people who would do such a act of kindness for a stranger.

I’ve seen it on one other forum. They call it PIF (pay it forward) and offer things like unused PCBs or electronic parts that they haven’t found use for in quite some time. That’s usually a once a year at most thing and many participate. It’s less spontaneous and generous than here.

Yeah, I replicated chance‘s idea. Standing on the shoulders of giants and all that.

Two things about it:
  1. It scrapes data from SIGforum. It’s only the text but it does use bandwidth from SIGforum. That is why I limited it to threads with less than 100 pages. I didn’t want anyone running it on the cats thread. I’ll be working on a more efficient way to make it work in the off-season.
  2. I literally just threw it together and took the Red Green approach (“This is all temporary unless it works.”). So if you see a problem please contact me at the email in my profile.

I have been a longtime member of a bicycle forum and while I know that some folks have given something to other specific members, I have never seen what we call a Karma in the 20 years I have been there.

Although as noted the computerized karma selector is still available, it’s not necessary to have something like that to make a totally random selection. What’s necessary? A single die (half of a pair of dice) or even a coin of some sort.

The process is time consuming at first, but quickly leads to a result.
Make a list of the entrants and throw the die or flip the coin for each one. Decide in advance which result will eliminate someone from the running: even number or heads in, odd number or tails out.

After running through the list the first time it will be reduced to about half, and half of that will be left after the second run. When you get to six or fewer, assign each a number and throw the die one last time.

Example with 50 entrants:
First run, about 25 left.
Second run 12 or 13 left.
Third run about 6 left.
Fourth run: a winner.

With a die, it will go even faster if the “in” group is selected by those who get a single specified number. If you start with 50 entrants and only those who get a 6 when the die is tossed continue to the second run, 50 becomes about 8 or 9.

If you expect a large number of entrants, use the die toss and a single number to screen people as they enter rather than waiting until the end.
“Okay, Jones, you got a six, so you’re in for the second run. Smith, you got a four, so you’re out.”

6.4/93.6

“ Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one’s own understanding without another’s guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one’s own mind without another’s guidance.”
— Immanuel Kant
