You should un plug everything in the house as well, and shut the gas off. Razz

But yeah, don’t you think 18 years of moving that valve caused the issue?

Never. And don't personally know anyone who does.

That being said... Once, for a 17 day vacation I shut off the whole house.

AND...
the first thing I did when we moved into our forever home 3.5 years ago was move the water heater, washer and dryer from the utility room to the garage. The old utility room became a pantry.

Endeavor to persevere.

No but I do turn the water to the toilets off if we go out of town. I have a friend whose toilet tank ended up breaking for whatever reason when he was gone for an extended weekend. Water kept trying to fill the broken tank. Being that we go out of town maybe twice a year, it's not a major issue.

Same here.

I answer only because the question was asked.
The reason I open threads about unusual practices in the first place, though, is because it’s fascinating to see how many people are evidently so insecure about what they do themselves that rather than just say “no,” or not even respond at all, that they feel compelled to ridicule others. I understand that sort of response if someone asks whether eating dirt from the garden or using lye as a bowel cleanse is a good idea—and especially if it’s being done to one’s child or dog—but turning a water valve—? Well that's what I do. If my wife and I will be gone for even just a few days, I shut off the main water supply to the condo. No reason not to really.

I never turn any of that stuff off. But, I do like the idea of shutting down the breaker to the pump.

I do - every time I've finished washing clothes. Had a leak from an old hose that caused a mess in the basement so, after replacing the hoses, got a tray, with an alarm connected to a water shut-off.

Had a leak from somewhere in the machine the next time - alarm didn't go off and water didn't shut off, so now I turn two valves to off and have no worries about any repeat performances of a basement flooded from any laundry hook-ups.

My plumber advised me to turn off the shutoff valve after each use. Not sure that it makes sense, but I do it anyway. I have excellent Dahl brand quarter-turn shutoff valves, so it’s an easy thing to do.

If were gone for any length of time I turn the house water off, water heater to pilot, set the thermostat to 60 and power down the network and unplug non essentials. I did have a hose break many years ago while out getting groceries.

If you shut off the well pump you may want to consider shutting off any electric water heaters. If the level somehow went down on it while you were gone then you would bake the element(s).

This is exactly what we do. I have a friend in the hardware business and he's never had a story of a less than 10 YO hose bursting. But plenty of stories of folks with the original from when they moved in 20 years ago, moved around 5 times and never changed the hoses, etc.

No not after every use but when we're gone for extended periods.

Some years ago when we were away for about 5 days, we returned to find the washer 3/4 filled with water. Apparently the valve in the washer started to leak a bit causing this. I replaced the washer and also installed a couple of short throw valves which will shut off the water supply. We only shut these down if we're going to be away for awhile. Is it necessary? probably not but after the last episode it's just an oz of prevention that's easy to do.

You know, thinking about it, if I had a couple of 1/4 turn water supply valves (and within easy reach right above and behind the washer), I'd probably get into a habit of securing them after every use. It'd be the simplest thing in the world to do. As it is, I don't at the moment.
