if you look at SNS3guppys picture, then the one with the drop, you can see a clear path of the red retardant right through the center of the burn, so they may be dropping it there to prevent a flare up...

You don't know that the drop in the picture is the one through the center of the burn.

Drops in the middle of a burn, with black on both sides, are nearly always indicative of a line burn-through. Retardant was dropped, and the fire burned through the retardant line.

With rare exception, we don't drop through the black, except to tie into a barrier, provide an escape path, support a burout operation, reinforce an existing line, or as part of a run when connecting unburned areas.

In this case, retardant inside the burn was almost certainly a line burn-over or burn-through.

No, but what can you tell about the tactic in use from that picture?

Nothing. Context.

What's it tying into, where the the line running, what's it connecting, what fuels and terrain lay behind the photographeror on the other side of the ridge, what's the aspect, and where is the fire?

None of that is evident in the picture.

That said, it's a big mistake to think smoldering ground is out or doesn't pose a threat. It can spot miles away, or re-burn (killed 13 smoke jumpers at South Canyon with a re-ignition in a burned area, in gamble oak).

Most likely the picture is a tie-in fron the opposite side of that ridge, connecting to the burn you see in the foreground, and using the retardant line, and the burn as barriers to fire spread, especially given that most of the smoke in that picture is on the opposite side of the ridge.

Thanks. Career Forest Service, who spent 9 years on the White River (I know about South Canyon), but all I can comment on is the picture in front of me.

If the state is looking to collect a couple of million from who ever's catalytic converter failed I suggest they figure out what kind of car it was and go after the car company... if you are going to chase ambulances... go after the ones that are carrying passengers with money.

Park City Peaks Hotel is offering an alternative for those who have been displaced by the fire and don’t have a place to stay.

The hotel has offered discounts for evacuees, charging $35 per night, which is usually the employee rate, to those who need shelter until they can safely return back to their homes, along with waiving their usual $25 per night pet fee. According to their reservation website, Park City Peaks Hotel room rates are usually from $149 per night.

On Sunday night, 68 of the hotel’s 127 rooms were booked with evacuees. Rayner said most of those individuals are staying again tonight.

“We’re a total community hotel. But what we’re doing and we were the first ones to do anything, and a lot of the other hotels were actually raising their rate, at this point. We had two individuals.. [who] were like thanking us at the front desk because they had stayed at a competitor hotel on Saturday evening, and they paid $500 a night. And that hotel, that’s typically what they charge for Sundance,” Rayner said.

“We were disgusted. I mean, we’re trying to help people out. You’re not trying to make money and gouge people during a crisis.”

^^^ Yes, the Peaks Hotel is where I've been staying. I've actually been staying for free as my wife got into contact with a lady through Facebook from France and arranged it. She was offering free stays on Saturday. I'm very fortunate. My wife is taking care of me even from France. I guess Facebook can have its uses at times.

Alan, my hope is that you return to your home soon and without major issues.

If I'm ever out west, I have no problem spending my money at a hotel that took care of the neighbors in a time of need.

^^^ Yup, the storm is hitting us pretty well right now.

I actually, for lack of a better word, snuck home today. It's such a great feeling just to be back inside my place. To sit down with a coffee and just enjoy being present in my living room in my favorite chair. The exact opposite of homesickness I suppose.

Anyway, I'm ready to leave at a moment's notice if need be. For now I'm going to enjoy this coffee and watch the storm which is in full effect.

Evacuation lifted at 2000 tonight! (At least for me in Pinebrook)

I'm going to celebrate with a big fat burger on my own grill.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. It was truly appreciated.
