Battery Powered Lawn Mower?
I thought I had seen something about these here, but the only recent thread I found is for gas-powered.

I do not have a lot of grass to cut, so I am considering a battery-powered walk-behind. My thought is less maintenance.

I do want self-propelled, at 82 years old I don't need too much aerobic exercise. Smile

I would like feedback from anybody who actually owns, or has used, a battery-powered self-propelled unit.

WOOT! is currently selling a 40 Volt Greenworks mower, $379 for the self-propelled model. Is anybody familiar with this model? Will this do the job?

I see that Lowe's has the 60 volt model for $399. With the 10% Veteran's Discount, that makes it lower cost than the WOOT! 40 volt model.

My lot is fairly small, less than 1/4 acre.

Recommendations are welcome!

I did a lot of research toward these and ultimately decided to stay with gas powered but for someone your age and for a small yard, they may work well.

The majority of the issues I read in many reviews of various electric mowers were:

-Not enough power to mow a medium or large lawn on one charge

-Battery powered don't seem to mulch grass all that well

-Batteries only last so long and are very expensive to replace, often like 25-50% of the cost of the entire mower itself

The Kobalt mowers at Lowes seemed to have better reviews than the Greenworks overall, so I'd look at that brand as well as Craftsman which seemed decent to me as well.

Use the search tool at karmanator, not the crappy embedded tool here.

Is it true they are quiet enough so that you could mow at 6 or 7 am and not piss off your neighbors?

That's something I'd love to have the capability of doing but it's just not doable with a gas mower where I live; I have to start at 8 or 9 at the earliest if I do mow first thing.

Neighbor has one of the electric Ego mowers, seems to work well, his yard is always cut nicely,

I have the Ego string trimmer and blower, both replaced the two stroke unit, have more power, require no fuel storage and mixing and are easier on the ears.

I have the ego and I love it, was originally thinking to get the green work but after reading most of the reviews on Amazon decided to go with the ego.

Never used the mower, but the handheld blower is great for small jobs. When I dont want to use the big stihl backpack blower for the porch or sidewalk it is great. Biggest problem with the system is probably run time... prolly good for very small yards, but beyond that prolly not sufficient.

ETA... a quarter acre is prolly too large for this.

I have the 56v Ego from Home Depot, recently bought it after deciding to replace my 6 year old Ryobi 40v model.

Roybi was good, no problems other than batteries starting to lose some capacity. Would take one battery to weed eat front and back yards and mow the front yard, a second one to mow the back.

I have about 450sq’ of lawn in the front and 650sq’ in the back.

Ego is great, weed eat front/back and mow front/back and still have 25% battery left.

I also got the Ego backpack blower and weed eater.

Home Depot would gives the Veteran discount on the non-self propelled model but not on the self-propelled one. I found a nice employee wtwho manually keyed in the discount on the self-propelled model so it was $450 instead of $500.

Yes - my Ego even has LED headlights so I can mow in the dark!

Mine is about as loud as a desk fan on low. I swear I hear the grass cry out in pain more than I hear the motor running when I use mine...

We have the Kobalt 80v mower and have been very pleased. Very quiet (I can barely hear it when inside) and light weight and is self propelled. It also comes with 2 batteries that last about 75 minutes each. The batteries charge up very quickly as well, full charge in about 40 minutes.

Ryobi 40v bought this year. No problems. Quiet, easy, self propelled options, similar price range.

1/4 acre house lot wouldn’t leave that much grass, should be capable. My lot is about that size, but the back quarter is trees only. Front, back, sides, about 25% of a 5ah battery left.

I've been mowing with my 40V Ryobi 20" mower for 3 years now and am very happy with it. I have 4 batteries and 3 other tools besides the mower. Weed eater, hedge cutter and chainsaw. All have worked very well the hedge cutter and mower are by far my favorite. Lots of work done with them and they keep going. The mower does very well on the lawn we have here. Probably about 1/3 acre (total yard is 2 acres but I use a Scag zero turn every 2 weeks and do it all)

I'd buy a Ryobi again without hesitation but I'm sure the type grass you have has a lot to do with how satisfied you'll be. I sold my gas push mower and gas weedeater and hedge cutter.

I am OCD on my lawn and just got a 40v Ryobi. Its a small lawn, so non propelled. $279. It is quiet and does a good job. Battery is good. One draw back is the nose is long which makes it tougher to get into corners of stone work. 1 month into it and happy.

My 40v Greenworks mower is about to turn 6 next month. I have a smallish lawn and it works great for me. I can do the front and back yards in about 25 minutes on one battery unless its really wet or I wait too long.
I had one battery fail in the first year but it was replaced under warranty and no problems to report since.
I really like the low maintenance and not having to keep gas around.
