Southwest Missouri or Northwest Arkansas. Seriously beautiful country, four seasons, conservative values. Some tornadoes, but not like other parts of the country.

Williams is on the very prelimary list of placesd to consider... My intial concern there is being able to find a job with a living wage for someone with my particular lack of formal education.

However, as I am looking probably a good many years in the future it is possible that I can change that still....

Thanks everybody, keep the suggestions coming. It does seem that a definite consensus is building towards west N.C. and east TN.... The helps a ton. We'll need to plan a visit out thre in the next few years. It helps that my brothr and his wife will likely return to her home in Roanake in the next 5-10 years as well. Judging by a map that is an easy morning drive from western NC.

I'm not opposed to working in a prison, though the thought doesn't appeal to me too much. The starting pay at the link Black posted isn't fantastic, compared to what I get now, but that doesn't take COL into account...

In any event, as someone cautioned, age will be the problem. I'll be 36 in a few months so I don't see that working out.

Depending on housing costs I wouldn't neccesarily need a fantastic job or income, especially if I catch the real estate cycle at the high end in CA. My wife doesn't currently work (little kiddos at home) but she is a teacher by training and I imagine it wouldn't be hard to transfer her CA education to another state's system and go to work.

I'd probably choose Kentucky if I could move anywhere. It probably gets a little hotter than you want and a little colder than you want but I'd say it will be one of the last red states in the union and meets several of your requirements.

May I suggest NW Arkansas. Total Republican congressmen and senators, Republican Governor and all state officers, low taxes, great land values, low cost of living and very reasonable taxes. We have the largest off-wall street brokerage house in the US (Stephens), great medical, symphony, and a ton of other amenities plus we have mountains, lakes, cleat rock bottom streams, rivers, and forests. You will love it here.

Just keep in mind most of TN is right in Dixie Alley and has severe weather all the time. So if you are looking to avoid that you pretty much rule out TN, AL, MS, GA, AR.

Honestly I don’t know what meets ALL your criteria.

Looking at your requirements, I would say Missouri or maybe Kentucky or Tennessee. I can drive to Colorado in a day easy, Wyoming about the same. Missouri is very conservative and gun friendly, has all the seasons and the COL is really pretty darn good. Our winters can be mean but they are short. Summer is always hot though.

What is the frequency of tornados? Is it an every year kinda thing, or a once in a while/every few years?

I moved to Southeast Tennessee (the "land of Cleve" Wink ) 32 years ago...I've only been killed by tornados twice (compared to four times by the 'bola Wink )...weathered a few snows and droughts and hot humid days and such...
But...
No income tax...
Good gun laws...
Reasonable cost of living...
Majority of people are nice (at least nicer than me)...
Less stress and shit...
Publix...

It's been pretty good here if I must say Smile...I could have done worse. (I'm happy)

Gimme a couple example towns that I can browse through?

Anybody have any thoughts on Waynesville, NC?

Agreed.

When we were looking to do our 'move to America' a few years ago, MO, KY and (East) TN were all on our short list. We wound up in the suburbs of St Louis, mainly by virtue of jobs and schools.

St Charles County, we adore it. Seems like every municipality in the county makes a 'best place in the US to live' list somewhere. It's growing rapidly but big chunks of it are still rural. Conservative and gun friendly. You can find areas that are *very* convenient to getting to jobs, there's big city traffic but the road net is surprisingly good.

Before here I'd lived my entire like in either NY, MA or NJ. Compared with those places, the coldest weather is colder and the hottest weather is hotter but in each case it's more bearable because it's dryer. Except for the sun- the sun here is noticeably stronger, and will roast you (both overheating and sunburn) much more than you'd think possible given where I grew up. So wear a hat and get used to thinking about shade.

The sun may not be a problem for you, but my pale carcass had to adjust. Wink Still, every single day here is a pleasure.

Been to East Tn twice in the last couple months. (Sevierville). People genuinely seem to be nice and happy. That surprised me as the wages must be reasonably low. I questioned a couple of workers (transplants) and they stated glad to be living in the area. High sales tax. Closest Costco is on the SW side of Knoxville. Knoxville does have an eye surgery center ( I am high risk). Coming through Ky had some of the nastiest McD's bathrooms I have ever seen. Was at Wendy's at 1030 am and it was filthy. Kind of turned me off to selecting Ky as a retirement home. A small sample, but drivers were worse also. Again - small sample.

it's good to go

that area around Sylva / Waynesville / Cullowhee is nice

Western Carolina University is in Cullowhee - about 30 mins away from Waynesville

NC is going blue faster than some posters here realize. State Repub legislators are growing RINO horns.

Getting congested.

I'm looking to leave and was born and raised here many decades now.
