I went through the same thing in January.
We now have a new dog (border collie) but still miss our Jake.

I went through this last October.

The hurt never goes away. It just hurts less as time passes.

I have a new 8 month old puppy now and it helped me greatly to get back on the horse so to speak.

My condolences on the death of your loyal companion. I know that he is missed. Like you, I never married and have no children--my daily companions are 6 cats. Your house seems empty without your friend, and I would suggest that you not wait too long before seeking another to share your home. Keep the memory of Kodak, of course, but bring another aboard to share your love.

So sorry for your loss. We lost our beloved boy last October, and we still grieve. Know how much they are a part of our lives, and the unconditional love they give us. At least he will be waiting for you and you know he is no longer suffering. My feelings are, that we grieve for our lost loved ones, but we can help give another the love they deserve and a good home, we have stuck to rescues the last 3 times. All have been fantastic companions. We will most likely start looking for another one this year, our home is too empty without one.
