Article states it went into effect Dec. 10th, with no exception for NJ Leo's (mags over 10 rnds). This is some nonsense.

Good. That will eventually reduce public political support for this sort of bullshit.

Now, hopefully, the law also says that a NJ cop has no public safety duties when off duty, and can't be criticized for failing to act in an emergency if off duty.

I've always considered laws that give cops extra gun privileges when they are off duty to be a divide and conquer strategy on the part of lawmakers.

It's been discussed here a little bit: https://sigforum.com/eve/forums...935/m/8970035054/p/2

And it's nonsense whether the person affected is the police or not. My sister is a Sheriff's deputy in New Jersey. Her preferred off-duty carry is a Glock 30s so her magazines are likely 10 or less. However, this stupid law will still create a problem when she does leave the house with her duty weapon. Frankly, even though she's my sister, I say good. Let them feel the full weight of this silly crap.

Dear New Jersey Cops:

Your elected representatives, and the people they serve, think so little of you, and have so little trust in you, that you are only permitted to carry weapons when on duty and under the direct supervision of your political overlords.

Have a nice day.

I sure hope/pray that whatever is in the water around Portland does not get spread around!! It must be something in the water. Other than extended drug abuse I can think of nothing that would cause so much stupidity!

And the State FOP supported the democrat politicians that created this mess. I argued the point with a fellow retiree that is a State FOP official and he claimed they would waste their influence since the Dems get elected. Looks like they were hoisted on their own petard. Back when I lived in New Jersey years ago I was an active volunteer firefighter.
A lot of police officers I knew were also firefighters.
Most of the police officers I knew back then did not want to carry off duty.
One friend did not even want to bring his gun in his house.
That was just part of the way things were looked at back then.
Most people I knew could not understand why anyone would even want to own a gun.

So who watches the watchers?

In order for a LEO to get arrested for haveing a standard capacity magazine they would have to be stopped, checked and then arrested by another LEO.

How likely is that?

Exactly, but if a cop does wind up getting arrested, I can guarantee a DA will charge the guy with the magazines.

I do not doubt that which just makes me belive the the LEOs will be more likely to take care of their own.

The same year CT went to 10 round mags, the State Troopers went to P220's.

Seems they're not as crafty in NJ.

This makes sense. Why? Because their law makers believes this makes a difference to criminals and since everyone, law abiding and criminal alike, will follow this law to help contribute to less gun violence, this is what needs to be done.

Why should they have different laws than the common peasant? Roll Eyes

The people in NJ voted for this shit so everyone should have to live with it. Don't like it, vote the bastards out.

All of the more civilized states should do away with police issued semi auto firearms of any kind. I recommend five shot revolvers filled with non lethal rounds. A non offensive, safe and gluten free mild pepper spray is good for off duty.

Years ago, NJ enacted a "Zero Tolerance" policy regarding hollow points. Lots of NYPD guys would drive from Upstate NY to the City by cutting through NJ. NJ State Troopers would pull them over and ask the *in uniform* NYPD guy if he had any weapons in the car. The reply went something like "Da fuck do you think, asshole?"
Then, the Trooper would arrest the NYPD guy, confiscate his personal vehicle, and levy a fine for $1000 per hollowpoint bullet (15+15+15+1). Governor's orders.

"The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. 'Make it evil,' he'd been told. 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with." -Douglas Adams

Driving and criminal offenses are two different matters. NJ cops tend to drive very fast when off duty, if stopped they flash their badges or show a PBA membership card. Times may have changed but way back when I was in NJ during my five years on the job NO ONE ever did a thing with a miscreant off duty cop. It was a free pass.
