One of the dark and only spoken about in hushed-voices, is the prevalence of two-legged predators at the festival. While the event is supposed to be a libertarian-paradise of sorts, where nudity and drug-usage is open to include areas reserved for sex, that environment is also going to attract those who are unable to control themselves around others. I wouldn't be surprised if this person had stepped over some boundaries and vigilante justice was issued.

I bet there's a serial killer there every year.
Their "security" is very cult like.
The people in charge of them are woke lefty fascists.

And law enforcement shows up.

I went to Burning Man in 2008 and 2009. It's a 10-day event. I only lasted 5 days each time and I was in an air conditioned trailer. Drinking 24/7 is hard on you. LOL

Big place (circle). 4-5 mile diameter. Inner roads are ~25 concentric rings around the center extending outward.

Lots of alcohol, nudity, debauchery, and drugs. The drugs were mostly done out of sight from the frequent police drive throughs.

There also is(was) a tremendous amount of beautiful art displays. People setting them up months ahead of time.
I was fortunate in the fact the Mother Nature didn't flush us, or blows us out of there.

I can't speak to how it is now. Looks like a shit show.

The inevitable collapse of any assembly without discipline, either self- or imposed. This is the road certain members of our society want us all to go down.

Rain, mud, windstorms, shit, outdoor living, and wild sex. Sounds pretty much like my Army days, except we didn't have the art.

OH for sure, these gatherings that pivot-around and are rabidly adamant that a certain ethos or principal is adhered-to, are going to attract individuals who are the complete opposite. Predatory behavior amongst the 'open-society' types is not uncommon since the overwhelming imperative is openness, non-judgmentalism and acceptance but, because the attendees must BELIEVE they collectively put their heads in-the-sand in the hopes that wishing it away would solve it.

The annual Rainbow Gatherings which are deep hippie, far-Left get-togethers, attract all manor of misfits and outcasts, where assault, theft and rape are not uncommon, often times resulting in participants forming 'tribes' and 'cliques' to protect each other in their attempt to re-invent the societies wheel.

Burning Man was started in 1989 in San Francisco. A guy got divorced and threw a party. During the party he took some kind of a symbol of a man (doll?) and he burned it in effigy of his married life.
That's how the whole thing started.

This sounds logical to me.
When I got divorced, the biggest catharsis I had was from a huge burn.

I went in 1995, as a few engineer friends and I were asked to set up lights for a stage.

Back then, lasers were not diodes and were a bigger challenge. Until gallium nitride (GaN)-based laser diodes in the 2000's did lasers take off.

It had a different vibe back then. I wouldn't go today.....

Car camp, drink, party to EDM, do drugs, meet different people, have sex with them, try mushrooms, see interesting art/creations

Earlier generations it was definitely more post-apocalyptic Mad Max/Blood of Heros type of get-together, where artists, odd-balls and those who looking for some escapism to daily life could get out there and do it...if for a short-time.

Same, and I have been offered to tag along, begged to go numerous times and I always said "nope". I knew people who were at the first "burn" in Ocean Beach, basically a huge bonfire party. These same people were into Survival Research Laboratories headed by Mark Pauline, a performance art outfit that put on insane public shows like this one that I actually saw.

I knew many people, including clients, that went to Burning Man year after year. To me, there was always a dark, underlying evilness to the affair, and I agree with Nicole Shananhan on her take on the event. I had a friend who went numerous times since the 90s and she eventually stopped because she too saw something a bit unsettling with the gathering.
