What happened: Ferrari unveiled the Luce yesterday in Rome, its first fully electric vehicle featuring four motors producing 1,036 horsepower, a 122 kWh battery with over 530 km range, and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 2.5 seconds. The four-door, five-seat model was co-designed with Jony Ive's LoveFrom and Marc Newson, priced from €550,000 ($640,000), with deliveries starting late this year.

Why it matters: The Luce marks Ferrari's strategic shift to attract affluent families and expand into EV-friendly markets like China, but investors reacted negatively with shares tumbling 6-7% in Milan, wiping out roughly €3 billion in market value. The launch comes as rivals like Porsche and Lamborghini scale back EV plans amid weak demand, making this a high-stakes gamble on whether luxury buyers will embrace electric supercars.

Common Ground
Jony Ive Design Collaboration: Outlets across the spectrum emphasize Ferrari's strategic partnership with Jony Ive and Marc Newson's LoveFrom collective, signaling the brand's intent to bridge traditional automotive luxury with Apple-era design philosophy and attract a tech-oriented clientele.

Market Skepticism: Sources universally note investor pushback following the Luce reveal, with Ferrari shares plunging roughly six percent amid doubts about the brand's departure from its gasoline-powered identity and concerns over broader EV demand weakness.
Strategic Market Expansion: Commentators agree Ferrari aims to use the Luce to penetrate EV-friendly markets like China, appeal to affluent families seeking practicality, and position itself for a younger generation while rivals scale back electrification plans.

I'm sure the line will be long; out the door and around the corner to buy one of those.

A Ferrari EV makes some sense - power/weight ratio and other performance factors can be beneficial.
A family hauler EV makes little sense in enough use cases to be economic suicide for dumbass corporate stooges who will take the golden parachute before the damage is known.

Nice Tesla you've got there...

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Without doubt the ugliest Ferrari I’ve ever seen. And there will probably be a waitlist to get one. Not just no but hell no man.

Saw the car earlier and thought this is going to be an epic failure!

Ferrari has produced some fantastic looking hybrid cars and they have been well received but to buy a Ferrari that doesn’t sound like a Ferrari is just ludicrous.

You could bu a Model S Plaid for $125K that is faster and has way more range…

Dear lord, that’s an abomination. A Ferrari? It looks like every other EV. At least the Porsche Taycan kind of looks like a Porsche.

I’ll let the former Ferrari chairman, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, share his thoughts in exquisite Italian:

quote:
“If I were to say what I really think, it would be unpleasant, so I prefer not to comment. I just hope someone removes the Prancing Horse from that car. We risk destroying a legend, which saddens me greatly. At least this is a car the Chinese won’t copy.”

That's pretty cool that a small premium based lux brand is putting out an EV. It's not for US consumption but where the big money is now is China and they love EV vehicles.

Problem for Ferrari is that some Chinese manufacturer will knock it off before Ferrari gets going...

Even if I could, I would never own a Ferrari due to their business plan. Even if you have the money, you have to be part of their club before you can up from them. I guess it has worked well for them since they have no shortage of buyers but to me, they forget where they came from.

1,000 horsepower is no joke, but that car doesn't look interesting at all.

And that's why Leno has none or very few Ferraris.
Porsche is getting that way too, with their limited run cars.
