Congrats on the new ride! We have a neighborhood FB page, and a few years back several people posted videos of roof rats commuting on the 2x4 rails of the wooden fences. I didn't want roof rats getting in my attic or garage. I already had pest control company for bugs so I called them about adding rats. They wanted to charge an exorbitant amount to drop off 3 bait stations and bait, and leave me to do all of the work of checking and refilling the bait stations. Well, I decided to DIY since I would've been doing all the work and didn't want to pay some exorbitant mark-up on the locking bait stations and the poison/bait. 6 locking bait stations and bait DIY was the same money as the contractor's 3. The first order of business is knowing whether to rodent is a rat or a mouse. For rats, it's more bait per station but the stations further apart. For mice, it's 1 bait per station with the stations much closer. The previous statements were based on using a bait like mine that works on both rats and mice (not all do). I had rats so I went with 6 locking bait stations (1 in garage, and 5 along my perimeter fence) at the widest recommended spacing. I went with a 2nd generation bait (aka poison), JT Eaton's Nectus 2G Soft Bait , that has an antidote (Vitamin K injection) in case of secondary ingestion (e.g. rat eats bait and dies, and somebody's dog eats dead rat). I think all of them have it, but it also contains an insanely bitter substance called Bitrex that should prevent primary ingestion by kids and pets. I went with the locking bait stations, Protecta Evo Ambush Bait Station, that have the option to use either traps (they make rat size or mouse size) or bait. They also have a base that you can put 2 bricks in and lock the bait station down so it doesn't blow around (I use this at the front of my garage between the two single garage doors). DIY Pest Control also has the above in discounted kits with bait stations and bait. I had a lot of activity at first then it tapered off to none. Now, I rebait at the change in seasons (i.e. when it starts getting hot in April and when it starts getting cool in December). I'd buy both the bait and bait stations again.
