One could say this forum is a great port in a storm too.

So true. This community was there when I needed it. I also agree that I learned just how much I didn't know before coming here.

I learned that you should ALWAYS check your 'Carry On' for weapons and ammo! Razz

True Story - My 19 YO son was heading to TX for his first ever business trip recently, so of course I suggested he not check any luggage, but rather should bring everything in a 'carry on' and a backpack/laptop bag! I dug out the appropriate bag and decided to give it a once over prior to giving it to him. Turns out I had stashed an Emerson 'SpecWar-A' folder in that bag! The knife was packed, along with a number of things I thought I might want to have with me on a road trip I took back in 2020 during Summer of Love Rioting...Apparently I had neglected to 'unpack' it! Wink

Don’t come in here with an attitude about why you can’t post in the classifieds RIGHT THIS INSTANT and then get belligerent about it and then flame out like an X-wing fighter getting shot down over the Death Star. Big Grin

Aside from the wealth of knowledge and generosity of the SF members, this group is like a second family to me.

I learned that there is a place where smart, knowledgeable, generally like-minded adults share their successes, failures, questions and solutions. All to help or receive help.

I don't know about the most important thing. Whenever I've asked for help here, you can be sure it's very very important to me.

And so far, people here have come through.

Another thing I note is whenever someone asks a question, it's interesting to note how much time between the question and the right answer.

And another thing is how specific and detailed the answers can be with the vaguest question.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

The policy of not making fun of or discussing physical appearance has altered my view regarding this and caused me to realize it is just another aspect of attempting to live by the golden rule.

I was tested the other day on a trip to Lake of the Ozarks. I think they raise WalMartians in the little towns near that lake.

I've learned that 2A supporters are nice, smart, and pretty darn funny. Not quite sure where you can go to get a good movie review, expert advice on a hammer drill, a truthful book review, how to fix an operating system, or get a hard time about preferring 9mm Big Grin. Oh, a pretty good moderator that keeps things on track. Thanks Para. The no comment meme threads is the start to my day.

This is what I've learned here.

Friends don't have to be at work, next door, or even a phone call away. In fact they could be on the other side of the planet and a person you've never met face to face.

But in good times and bad they are always there to laugh with you, at you, poke you, prod you, at times even irritate you... but always there when you really need them.

And when you do finally meet a few of them, they are all top shelf people.

Worlds largest assembly of top shelf imaginary friends.

On a side note... I once wondered what it would be like if every member of the board could be in the same place at the same time for a huge gathering. Then realized just how scary that would be Big Grin Cool Big Grin you know, for the rest of the world. Big Grin

That all isn't quite lost. The idea of "community" exists.

Secondarily, that there are a heck of a lot of extraordinarily smart, compassionate, and generous people out there.

If we could just reach consensus on the whole "yeah, but where?" question, we could assemble one hell of a prosperous, happy, and independent nation-state. Hell, we've already minted coins, which puts us ahead of several UN member states.

This echoes what several have said, I think, but I have learned that there are still a lot of wonderful people in the world. I get discouraged about the direction the country is going, and sometimes feel that everybody wants something and nobody is grateful about anything…then I come in here. I’m sure grateful for all my brothers, and a few sisters, in here who help keep my bubble pretty well centered.
