Any time you're not just the owner, but also a client, there's going to be an appearance of conflict of interest. Doesn't matter if the conflict is actually there or not, the appearance will be there. For people that may have a personal dislike of you, that's all that matters. For everyone else, there's always going to be a different perception when interacting with you than with anyone else, even Arc. Even when you want to have a discussion just as another member, the superior firepower that keeps the peace is an ever-present specter.

I'm sure there are people here that you don't particularly like. I've seen you act in haste, then reverse yourself after some afterthought. You're human. It's unavoidable. The mark of a good administrator is that ability to re-evaluate after the emotions ebb a bit. You can be a son of a bitch, but so can everyone, and you do a good job checking yourself when you are. I think that's as much as anyone can ask of another imperfect person.

I don't frequent bars as much as I did in my youth, I enjoyed the atmosphere quite a bit. To a point. I went to bars that had regular patrons that were generally well behaved - you know the type, happy drunks, only occasionally did we have a visit from a fighting drunk. When we did, I was happy that the place had an effective bouncer. The best bar I went to had the most effective bouncer ever...found out later that he was also the owner.

Just my thought. We are visiting the house of our host. We are friends that don’t always get along. Out of respect, and to be invited back, we respect our host and follow his rules.

Over the years I've seen a number of members crash and burn and in every case, not only did they deserve what they got, but it was very evident to me it was forthcoming as the conversation progressed.

I'm perfectly fine with the way the forum.

I am probably in the majority of sigforum's 86000 members...read frequently but post infrequently. But the amount of knowledge I have gained, and the enjoyment I have had on sigforum has been huge.

I have been following a large forum for my "other" hobby for a while. What a disaster that site is. Good people there also who are very knowledgeable, but the forum is so full of spam and fake posts it is hard to pick through the crap.

So from one of those who are usually in the shadows,

Thank You!
Well Done!

I've moderated a few forums since back in the the stone ages of the internet and was a bit softer than our illustrious host because I saw that there is no way to communicate nuance in the flat text communication of the innernettubes. From that viewpoint there have been a small few instances where I thought "damn, jeffe, you ripped that poor guys asshole out" where I thought a smack in the back of the head was more appropriate.

but! I understand that the odds actually were in the boss's favor and it actually was more likely the frikkin idiot probably was that stupid and more likely it was better to head that shit off before it got deeper than to let it go in worries that it may have just been innocent assholery.

So keep it up as is. If I get a punch to the mouth I'm man enough to consider if and what kind of stupid I may have been to work on correcting it and not get butthurt.

The results speak for themselves, this place is a paragon of the internet because stupid gets corrected quick. Even I don't remember the communities where I fell short on the boss's job.

I will respectfully add a point that I learned the hard way and think members should consider when they get upset at the way a thread is being moderated.

You don't know the whole story. Really, you don't. Most posts that get moderated do so due to a history that you probably are not aware of. Not always, but many times a member has been warned in multiple prior threads that you may not have seen or something happened off the forum via email that you are not aware of.

Many years ago I got bent out of shape over my perception of how someone was treated and left the forum for a period of time. I didn't raise a stink or draw attention to it, I just stepped away because I thought someone was being treated unfairly.

Turns out I was wrong and the person had it coming. I came back and my posting rights had never been shut down and I was allowed to continue posting even though I probably didn't deserve it.

So, I would say keep that in mind when you see a thread where you disagree with the way it is being moderated. You may (and probably don't) have the full story, so just trust the process and enjoy being a member here. It's OK to just agree to disagree and move on - you are not going to agree with everything that everyone says.

I agree with Artie's post as well. Coming from military background someone has to be in charge and be willing to make the tough decisions and hard calls that come with the territory. How many forums have been around essentially unchanged for as long as SIGForum? There's a reason for that.

I think you’re fair. Anyone who has been here any amount of time knows how they can and can’t act and if they cross the line they’re gonna be corrected.

The problem I see are people who think they can act however they want (and in many places in society they can) with no consequences, then when they are corrected resist or rebel. They more than likely ran their households growing up instead of mommy and daddy. Then they come to a place like this that has structure where they don’t run the show they can’t stand it and think you’re a ‘meanie’ or overbearing.

I for one enjoy this forum very much (along with the commensurate moderation).

Throughout my military career I had to remind subordinates that there were constraints that we had to live within, or find another profession.

I can see behaviors exhibited in those that run afoul of this forum's norms and behaviors that are similar to those I had to help 'invite' to find another profession. Those individuals also had several chances to ponder their actions and correct course, but let their stubborn nature and need to be 'right' interfere with that.

I don't post a lot on the forum but I do read a lot here. There's a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum and I enjoy their company. I try to keep my nose clean and to Para, I say thank you and I appreciate the way you run things.

I've been a member for 16 years and counting. I rather think that one of the things most remarkable about SigForum is how consistent the day in and day out administration of the forum has been. In many ways, this forum has much the same feel and atmosphere as I remember it having over a decade ago, and that's why this forum has been my daily online hangout for all this time.

A great place to frequent and learn much. With as many people who participate some are gonna misconstrue, misquote, and make errors no matter what. I see fair treatment and respect here in abundance. Thanks to you Para and the rest. Carry on.

This is the best run forum I've been a part of.

People need to chill out. Forums are a great outlet to discuss issues, share ideas, and info. No one is going to be right all of the time.

With that said, show some respect to the mods and owner. They do a fantastic job with this place!

Speaking for myself, I'd PAY to be a member here if that were ever to come about. There isn't any other forum that I would be willing to do that with. So that says a lot about how I view this forum.

I'm not super active on this forum and have not tried to be part of the frequent posting dozen or so members.

I have told my wife what a wonderfully diverse set of people we have here, laborers, engineers, pilots, executives, doctors, lawyers, machinists, EMTs, law enforcement, knuckledraggers, etc and how they each have independent views they share and I can appreciate those views. To me this is the best part of this forum.

It is well managed such that differences can be aired and respect maintained. Logic and historical based common sense prevails. fwiw, I do not frequent random boards where the last or loudest voice rules.

full disclosure, I did send Para a beautiful pic of an Alaskan bald eagle a few years ago.

interesting, I have considered this place, like any place, as they say..if you don't like it leave..lol..i like the rules ,it seems to keep the dregs and trolls away....that being said..having been on here a LONG time..i would like to see an easier way to post pics..I am NOT a computer wizard and this difficulty may be attributed to my own lack of skills. I am pleased with the mods and see no reason to change.

thanks, shawn
