He's probably got some pressure from China. Trump likely applied pressure that way since Un is too scatacephallic to be moved any other way.

Something changed radically in the last 30 days in N. Korea. A few potentials

1. The country is on the verge of collapse and revolution, this is his only way out
2. The smart generals figured out that the above is pending and talked him into this
3. This is a ruse to pull down the fence and demilitarize the border so he can pull another 1950 and threaten nuclear strikes if anyone comes to aid Seoul.

My cautious optimism is leaning towards #3

I don't see any way as unhinged as that dude is, that he would ever contemplate having a run at taking over South Korea.

The boy done met his match. DJT.

What is the meaning of “denuclearization” in whatever context Moon and Kim agreed to and will that satisfy the U.S?

There’s a lot of things that could be/go wrong with this.

- Kim ain't going away, regardless of what agreement comes of this, his family has created a cult of personality around a criminal enterprise. How much does the ROK pay him to step-aside and lay low in retirement?
- All those generals and functionaries are dependent upon their deity Kim, do they dutifully go-along or, do they go rogue? Their gravy train has a possibility of going off the rails.
- ROK citizens ain't going to be happy with any kind of financial package: step-away money, economic assistance or, financial stimulus. Look at the pics of the 'protestors' the only ones celebrating are over the age of 70, everyone younger is pissed, their economic future will be cratered. Look at the protests during the Olympics and the brew-ha-ha over Kim's sister's visit and their professional cheerleading team.

Hopeful this goes well and the best outcome....Trump gets a Nobel Prize Wink

But I do hope this is for real and President The Donald scared that nut job into submission.

Where is China in all of this and what do they get out of it? China has long considered the Korean peninsula to be within their sphere of influence. Much like the Monroe Doctrine telling Europe to stay out of the western hemisphere. Various economic & military treaties over the past several decades between NK and China.

Now, a quick google gives a wide range of numbers but a conservative estimate is that 80% of North Korea's trade is with China. That's a huge chunk of NK's economy and leverage over NK's behavior. It seems that China's "support" of sanctions is more like lip service in hopes of helping their international image.

I have difficulty believing that NK's recent shenanigans are being done without some sort of collusion.

Trump isn't going to do what other administrations have done, give concessions without true actions being made by the Norks.

In the past, lil'Kim would promise this or that, get concessions then ignore the promises made. That simply is not going to happen now. President Trump is going to keep maximum pressure until there is solid proof that Kim is fulfilling his promises.

I have a feeling the recent U.S. tariff announcements were used as pressure on china...trade with U.S. or NKorea?

NK came to the same realization as SK. Both will lose in a peninsular war. I do not expect reunification in what's left of my life span, but then I thought the same about Germany (although it was a fluke - events just sort of took over).

President Trump deserves full credit if things between NK and SK continue to move positively forward.

It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.

The Left was convinced Trump was going to start a nuclear war with NK. They were hand-wringing and looking for their safe space.

I think Rocket Man took notice and decided he didn't want any of that.

The credible threat of the U.S. unleashing it's military might is what has created this opportunity for peace, along with tough sanctions and help from the Chinese.

President Trump made it clear he was going to "handle" the NK problem, one way or another.
His instincts have been spot-on.

I love how the Left played right into Trump's strategy.

OF COURSE we don't trust Kim;
OF COURSE there will have to be continual verifications;
OF COURSE there "may be snags";

BUT THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT THIS IS AN EPIC DEVELOPMENT.
It is disgusting to see how the hate-Tump media are either downplaying this or already thinking of ways to spin it into something not that great.

THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP!

This is a good first step. All we have to do is be sure of our footing for the next step, and the next, and the next, without taking a month of Sundays to be sure of each step or letting Li'l Kim begin to wonder if there's a spark of sanity lurking somewhere in Trump's brain. All of this can be done.

As for China, well, I DON'T say "fuck China". I say send them the bill for redeveloping North Korea. They still have plenty of foreign exchange reserves, and that'll convince those deluded egomaniacs that they're playing a benevolent role AND have a "seat at the table" in whatever transition happens without giving them anything they can count on permanently. At the same time, they've got enough resources that they can afford to be generous with any aid they send "in kind" rather than "in cash".

Based on the headlines and news reports, it's easy to see to whom the next Nobel Peace Prize will go:

Kim Jong-un

/sarcasm

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.
