Elon Musk announced the latest frontier he’s aiming to conquer: humanoid robots

The irascible entrepreneur said Thursday he would have an initial prototype of an androgynous “Tesla Bot” by next year.

Based on the same technology as the company’s semi-autonomous vehicles, the robot will be able to perform basic repetitive tasks with the aim of eliminating the need for people to handle dangerous or boring work, Musk said at an online event on Tesla’s advances in artificial intelligence (AI).

“Tesla is arguably the world’s biggest robotics company because cars are semi-sentient robots on wheels,” he said. “It kind of makes sense to put that into a humanoid form.”

Musk pledged that his future robot would be a benign presence.

He said the Tesla Bot, which will have five-fingered hands and come in black and white, is intended to be “friendly” and built such that “you can run away from it and most likely overpower it.”

“Hopefully that won’t happen, but you never know,” he joked.

My thoughts were how long until I have to try out a 7.62 on one of these. And why is my confidence not high.

50 might buy me a year or 2. Then they are the size of Humvies and no small arm available will touch it.

Gotta think bigger, need a trump card. Using the force against them. They need electricity. Can we short em out? Cattle prod? Lure them under power lines? Lightning weapons? Spray the ground at their feet with water and drop a hair dryer on it?

Need a serious grill guard on the truck too.

Once they started using CGI it ruined it for me. Instead of being impressed with their accomplishments I'm more like that's pretty cool for Hollywood.

That video 46and2 posted is from an indie special effects studio. The robot is CGI-inserted over an actual human in a motion-capture suit. It's not meant to be a serious video like the Boston Dynamics ones.

I'm just as impressed at the Boston Dynamics video quality as the robot. I don't think my monitor has displayed anything quite so vivid. I actually thought the BD video was fake because it looks so crystal clear.
