I used to do this regularly with folks living in the UK, Germany and Japan. What I did (most people would rather use Facebook now) was ask around to see who traveled to that area regularly on business.

What I found was a company that owned their own aircraft that traveled over there on a monthly basis. They even flew out of my local airport.

I tried not to abuse the favor, because they were very kind, and they would take a small box (which wasn't human heads or body parts) and was able to be opened. My friends would pick packages up at the airport. I gave little thank you gifts to the flight crew and everyone was happy.
