I stopped by the local Ford dealer because they had F250’s in stock and I have been looking at them off and on for probably a year. It would be at least a year if we decide to go that route we may go with a class a RV. Both of the trucks had a $20k mark up on them putting them right at $90k. Who would pay $20k over MSRP for anything? You will never get that money back. What are your thoughts? Is the same thing happening near you? They sold one of them sometime this week. This message has been edited. I agree. I would wait it out. It’ll improve. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Even a factory order at msrp minus Ford's incentives will be way way less than a 30% markup. Subaru tried that on me once "They are really in demand", they said. [me] "Sure", gesturing to an entire back lot of unsold cars.

I sniffed around the local Subaru dealer for a Forester. Once. I asked the sales dude if there were any cash incentives, rebates or other deals. He said Subaru doesnt do those deals. I said then no deal for me! I think your Ford dealer is trying to gain some $$$ during this chip shortage. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

I brought my '17 RAM diesel in last week for a oil change, and one of the salesman pitched that he'd give me 58K for it. Tempting, but then I'd have to buy another truck for even more $$. I only paid 52k for it. Yeah, I'd also like to say "wait it out". ___________________________ He looked like an accountant or a serial-killer type. Definitely one of the service industries.

I agree this is an insane time, but I will say that my Subaru lot -- which normally has acres of cars, has less than 10 new Subarus right now. It's a bad time to buy. BMWs seem to be less affected. If I buy this summer, I may buy a new X3 instead of a Subaru this time around.

I've been buying Fords since the 90s. Fords stupid decision to not make cars any longer has ended my business with them. I hope they choke on their trucks and SUVs. Looks like I will be buying a Toyota sedan. Oh well. Regards 18DAI 7+1 Rounds of hope and change

I could care less about Ford and any of their products. I just had a personal experience with a Raptor that left such an acrid taste in my mouth that I will never go there again. Good luck Fix Or Repair Daily.

One of the points if the markup is to convince more people to wait it out. If someone is desperate and can't wait it out (like they just had their truck totaled) they need to have some kind of inventory. If they were running them at their normal pricing, some enterprising folks would be buying them immediately and flipping them for a massive profit. Its the ammo shortage all over again. Ammo retailers learned their lesson from 2012 and instead of letting Bubba who owns a pawn shop buy all their ammo the second it gets off the truck only to put it up in his shop at 3x the price, they raised the prices themselves. This supports the retailer and not the reseller and it also helps ensure a steadier supply of ammo. Does it suck, yes. But if you believe in capitalism you can't be mad at them for adhering to the laws of supply and demand.

My older son got rear ended in his 2016 F-150 xlt last week. Hopefully it is repairable. He started looking at a new one but the local dealer only had ONE F-150 on the lot…the best selling vehicle in the US… Anyway, in talking with him over the weekend I suggested that if the truck gets fixed that he sell it as he will get crazy money for it and drive one of my extra vehicles for the two months before his deployment downrange. Then hopefully by the time he gets back this chip shortage will be over and things may be back to normal and his new truck won’t cost him much more than what he’ll sell his 2016 for. ------------------ Eddie Our Founding Fathers were men who understood that the right thing is not necessarily the written thing. -kkina

They didn’t. And besides, how does that figure in to the current chip shortage and the corollary high car/truck prices? ——————————————— The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Psalm 14:1

Really not ready to buy or even certain I want to buy an F250. My daughter in law had her jeep stolen about 2 months ago, they were able to replace it with a new Bronco for a little bit under MSRP. I had a discussion with a BMW motorcycle dealer a few weeks ago while the wife's bike was being serviced and we were talking about this very issue. My local Yamaha/KTM dealer hasn't had any inventory in months. As of last week he had 2 KTM 890's and a Yamaha scooter and is getting almost nothing from either of his suppliers. The BMW dealer had a showroom full and 150 bikes in their warehouse. They were having problems getting recall parts and some other parts and special order bikes were slower than normal in coming in to the US. I bought a used SUV about 15 months ago for $20k at a local dealer. Few days ago I was picking a part up to do some work on it at the same dealer, and the dealer offered to buy it from me for $25k cash - $5k more than I paid them. They seem desperate for any kind of decent inventory these days.

I'd wait it out. But I don't need a new car or want one so much that I can't keep my dick in my pants. BUT, this is basic supply and demand. People want cars, and they don't have many. So the price goes up. This seems so simple when you read it, but these sort of threads keep popping up, which indicates that people don't really understand basic economic principles. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Markups are an inevitability in this current environment. It's about their survival. A dealership's operational expenses don't go away when there's not enough inventory to sustain them. Loans, bills and leases still need to be paid. Wages could be trimmed through layoffs and cutback of hours, but they not going to lay off everyone, not unless they're shuttering for good like so many eateries, bakeries and other retailers around here thanks to Rona. Yeah it stinks that they're seriously overcharging on those trucks. But at least now there's at least a somewhat understandable reason behind it. Not like with the ridiculous "market correct pricing" that were commonplace practice prior to the pandemic. -MG
