I appreciate that. I've always talked about doing it, but I need to wait for some statutes of limitations to run out Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Congo, excellent writing skills sir !! I would like a preorder of your memoirs!! Thank you for a great thought experiment. I am sure many of us have run through such an event in our minds on the resident side of the equation. It was great to hear a good outcome and such perspective from the responding officers. Thank you sir!

I'm wondering how you guys 'quiet' your German Shepherd? Ours wouldn't be quieting down with strange noises in/near the house.

Policies are meant to be broken my friend... When we ran across your scenario. I always went around to the bedrooms on the exterior and pounded on the side of the house and announced so I wouldnt get ventilated by the homeowner....It worked for me...then we made entry and cleared the home for them. I've done that several times myself, with varying results. We also looked back in retrospect and thought it would have been a good idea to turn on our blue lights, but in this case the bedroom was on the opposite side of the house, so it wouldn't have made a difference. Our dogs shut up when I tell them to shut up. Their job is to alert me, then once I am alerted and let them know it, STFU. It wasn't any different when we had Lex, a Witmer-Tyson trained, homeland confused*, German Shepherd Canine, except for him it was Fooey! instead of "Shut up!" like it is now for the Aussies & the Queensland. *As a German Shepherd, born in the Czech Republic on Saint Paddy's day, trained to German commands, named Alex Luz Maria (Who the heck does that to a dog?!?!), and transplanted to California, no wonder he was confused about his homeland. Of course with Lex, at times one would command "paws off/pass off" and "Gib loud" (the correct German spelling isn't even on the same planet as that, but the dog understood it as "Get ready/get excited" and "tell him you're gonna eat him." It was easier to quiet down a canine that knew that if he played his cards right he was going to get to play (bite someone), but the Aussies and Queensland have figured it out.

I always wanted to train a dog in Klingon, but had trouble with the pronunciation. God Bless and Protect the Once and Future President, Donald John Trump.

I'd love to have a professionally trained dog, but my Danes just make do with what I've taught them. They are very good and I guess, now that I think about it, I have encouraged barking at strangers (or anyone entering the property) without also rewarding a STFU-type command to counter it when it's no longer needed. Something I'll try to remedy.

I suspect that your Danes are very effective. I'm not sure I'd want a Dane after me any more than a GSD. A professionally trained dog is great, but someone who works with their own dog and is consistent can go an awfully long way. I'll bet you don't have much trouble teaching them to turn it off.

I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Part of the purchase contract with the breeder was that I agreed to never get the dog attack training. God Bless and Protect the Once and Future President, Donald John Trump.

Really? Did they say why? Was it just a CYA legal thing so if your dog ever bites anyone they can say it isn't their fault?

It is very common perspective in the Ridgback community. Liability & protecting breed reputation are certainly part of it. But there is also the belief that RRs are naturally protective and that with bite training they may become overly enthusiastic. I've had two Rhodesians. I understand why because in FL the breed was trained to be aggressive and that is just now changing. Like Dobies, more about the humans than the dog. My current dog is basically a mini Rhodesian - a black mouth cur and he responds better to commands than either of my other dogs ever did. When you get a Rhodesian - you get interviewed and matched, and many get declined. Not a bad thing most of the time. “Forigive your enemy, but remember the bastard’s name.” -Scottish proverb
