Sigh... a large snake crawled up under my wifes Jeep Cherokee and now she will not get in it or drive it. She is in a total panic that the snake will get in the interior somehow.

So now I have to go try and find this damn thing or buy her a new car or light it on fire or something....

A large snake is extremely unlikely to be able to make it into the cab of a vehicle, unless she leaves the doors, windows, or sunroof open. Passenger compartments tend to be fairly sealed to the outside.

Some cars will have small drain holes in the floorboards and doors, especially in stuff like Jeeps, trucks, and convertibles. But those are usually quite small.

And there's a small fresh air intake pipe that allows outside air to pass through the cabin air filter, through the blower motor, and out into the ventilation system. I guess a small enough snake that was really dedicated could make it all the way through all that and out a vent given enough time (and a long enough span without running the fan), though it's very unlikely.

So you have to find the large snake for her, well, it's your husbandly duty.

Could go get her a mongoose and let it live in the Jeep....

some vehicles have a vent, usually in the rear, that will open when doors are shut, kind of a pressure valve, I had a few cars in the past that had them, tho doubt a snake can get in them,

if it were my wife, she would have burnt the garage down with the car in it,

You'll need a large prop snake of the same color as the actual invader.

I had a 2007 Jeep Commander, which is similar to the Grand Cherokee. I had a mouse or a rat get into my air vent and make it's way into the glove box and nest there. Shredded paper, fur and lint everywhere!

A snake could get in that way. If I were you, I'd disassemble the dash. That would give you a much better look at ways that a snake could get in.

Check the engine compartment. They crawl up in there for warmth. Open the hood slowly with one hand, be at your ready with your 10mm in the other hand. Big Grin

She has just informed me the snake now has squatters rights and owns the car and she will never get in it again... of course I keep sending her snake memes, which is probably not helping.

I have had it with these mofo snakes in this mofo jeep....

Maybe animal control can check out the car. Also not fond of snakes. They should just stay out there where snakes reside and leave people alone. Damned things. They got huge teeth, big long tails and mean eyes. Nope.

A rodent can get through any hole as large as it's own skull.

Mice are also known to chew through intake vent materials like paper air filters and plastic ducting to get access to other areas.

Whereas snakes generally do not.

If the snake is not found in the disassembled dash, don't stop there. Continue removing parts from the vehicle until the snake is found. Take plenty of pictures and label the parts as you remove them, to help after you find the snake and start reassembling the pile of parts into a working vehicle.

Or just get a spray can of Snake-B-Gone.

I house-sat for a year for someone who's driveway was part field. One day I was heading to work and a mouse came out of the air vent by the radio. That was fun.
If it had been a snake, I'd likely be dead.

My wife used to own a Jeep Cherokee, 2 of them to be exact.

One year shortly after we moved down here, she was driving to town, and heard a buzzing from the back. She pulled over, and when she opened the rear hatch, there was a small rattlesnake, pissed as all hell. She managed to get the stick she used to keep the hatch open, and coaxed it out of the back.

Never did figure out how it got in, but seems to me those Cherokees can be kinda porous.

Good luck with your new snake friend, and be careful.

Mike

Why a 10mm? Wrench or socket? The snake have a loose bolt or something? Wink

Being as JGCs have a ground clearance of 8-11 inches, depending upon trim package, and a fording depth of 20 inches: Probably not Wink
