Not to drift but I heard about this guy from my daughter-in-law at my granddaughter's birthday party yesterday. This is my DIL:

Technology will always play a role. Drafting and having pace setters is the norm in many sports. In cycling they call it a peloton, And having a pace setting truck is just a foreshadowing of the heads up displays that future athletes will wear.

Tech will always help sports as it should. It makes sports faster, safer, and more accessible.

There was a quote from Ediud that summed up why he did this, "Now I've done it, I am expecting more people to do it after me."

That's the point -- to show it can be done.

Wrong. What is “it” that was shown exactly? Without standardized rules, no record is valid. Following your logic, why don’t we just let all baseball players use corked or aluminum bats? Why should drug testing be performed at all in sports? Handicaps are just that and while the time is impressive, it is much less so compared to other stellar athletes’ performances given the advantages this runner had.

That's why practical shooting has an open division and different car racing leagues have different rules. Biking has different equipment requirements based on the type of race and what organization is the governing authority.

This wasn't a race. This wasn't a competition. It was the equivalent of an exhibition game to show that it's possible and to break a mental barrier. Just like the 4 minute mile as soon as Baninster broke the record soon someone else ran it faster.

Nobody is going to be running the Boston Marathon with a truck in front of them setting a pace. But most everyone who runs uses a Garmin or Apple watch which does almost the same thing -- my Fenix tells me down to the second my pace per mile. Throw the same information on a display built into my sunglasses and it's not much different than the truck.

So of course there are sanctioned events and exhibition events. But as Strambo pointed out when you're already the guy holding the record then I think you can get away with being a bit quicker : )

Find the National Geo special on the first attempt Nike made to break two hours. This is the second effort. Yes, they use fresh pacers on a controlled environment. That was the intent - eliminate or minimize all external factors and see what the fastest marathoner can do. Kudos to Eulid.

My fastest marathon pace was 6:50 on a downhill course. This guy is 33% faster. Yikes

You should be. At the end of the day, he still ran that race with only his legs, outside and in the weather.

I ran a 4:20 mile split in a 3 mile in high school and by the end of the race I was dead, barley went under 16:00 by the end, I cannot imagine running that pace for 26.

I sure am impressed. How many of us here could run a 3:30 mile? I certainly cannot.

To MAINTAIN that pace for 26 miles, regardless of his support crew, is something maybe only 10 people alive today could do. . .

Ever see that show "The Six Million Dollar Man" from the 70's? Bionic legs? I saw Lee Majors outrun a semi truck in that show.

It was a demonstration event; could it be done.

Was about pushing human physiology limitations. The fact there was an audience along the course, an elaborate array of measuring devices to include lasers ( Eek ) and Nike used this event to leverage product marketing. If you're a lifetime runner, particularly somebody that does half's and full's, this is interesting.

HA! Good one.

He probably consumes 3000-5000 calories in a day as do most endurance athletes at the top of their game.

Cool article on the shoes he wore. Way, way back in HS when I was running, Nike had just come out with the waffle trainer, LD1000, and the next year LDV. All good shoes for the time. By 79 they were starting to design distance racing shoes, Oregon Racer and the Elite. For CC distance racing spikes were just being developed, Vainqueur, which was the "shit" back then, but let me tell you, the heat build up would blister my feet. Good for Nike to push technology.
