The wife uses them on the kids primarily. Will it replace actual medicine, no but we also understand it's limitations. She uses the Young Living brand and has been pleased with them. We have seen it help our oldest son focus at school. They do have a relaxing nature to them as well.

By no means am I looking for anything medicinal.

I figure I'd give it a go. Picked one of the top rated diffusers and lavender essential oils. Worst case scenario is I'm out $27.

Eucalyptus may be good in the winter when the kiddos are all snuffy. May be better thank slapping Vicks all over them.

In the end it will likely smell better than the mild aromoma from the diaper genie

I had similar issues with my two boys. The oldest was a horrible sleeper but he did get better when he started school. My youngest was never a problem. We tried oils and everything else but they really didn't make any difference.

I have used Tea Tree oil diluted with water to kill mold. It worked as well or better than bleach. Smelled better too.

Tea Tree Oil works well on skin irritations and fungal infections too.

I have some Tea Tree soap that I use during the sweatier months to help prevent and treat Heat Rash and Athlete's Foot/Jock Itch.

Smells good too.

Give it a shot. Why not?
They say certain colors are soothing, and I believe that.. greens and blues.. so why not smells? I certainly believe that scents trigger memories and emotions- most everyone loves the smell of turkey and apple pie- these are comforts.
Maybe something his mom wore that day might help as well, like a nice soft shirt that smells like her... and run him around the block Wink
What smells make him happy and relax him? Fresh cut grass, the smell of a bath, cinnamon...and don't discount sounds. I loved listening to the crickets and frogs at night.. maybe a noise machine? This is the little one that had ear troubles, iirc?
Good luck.

I use essential oils for my beard. My skin gets very dry having a beard and while not using the oil for a few days I develop a dander. Black shirts- terrible without it. The bottle I buy cost $11, free Amazon shipping and last close to 2 months. I can smell it when I first put it on (smells great), but my wife claims she doesn't smell it. Beard is very soft and I don't get ingrown hairs using it.

Be careful with eucalyptus around small children.

Eucalyptus essential oils are mostly 1,8-Cineole, which can cause central nervous system and breathing problems in small children.

A few drops in a diffuser isn't going to do anything, but don't start rubbing it on them or feeding it to them.

I started making soap and lotion a while ago with my daughter and wanted to use essential oils for fragrance. I bought the book "Essential Oil Safety" by Tisserand and Young (which is apparently the bible of, well, essential oil safety) to make sure I didn't do anything harmful or dangerous. Reading it was sort of startling.

This is mostly true but not quite always - the best example being wintergreen essential oil, which is about 97% methyl salicylate, which your body metabolizes into aspirin (salicylic acid).

Why would you not just take an aspirin?

I'm not suggesting you should use wintergreen essential oil instead of aspirin. I've never used wintergreen essential oil for anything.

Homeopathic "medicine" and the idea that the right essential oil (or right combination of essential oils) can cure any illness is obvious quackery.

I'm just saying that the argument that essential oils don't do ANYTHING is also wrong. Some of them do, in fact, do SOMETHING, by virtue of having specific chemical constituents in sufficient quantity to have some scientifically proven effect.

Citrus essential oils are mostly limonene, which is a pretty good solvent and degreaser. It's the main active ingredient in "Goo Gone" and other citrus-based cleaners.

Peppermint essential oil is mostly menthol, which is a mild topical pain reliever and skin irritation reducer. Menthol is the main active ingredient in IcyHot and some cough drops. If you've used regular Tiger Balm, its active ingredients are menthol and camphor. Tiger Balm Muscle Rub adds methyl salicylate (the main thing in wintergreen essential oil).

Plenty of them can also cause serious health problems if you use too much. Just because something comes from a plant doesn't make it good.

I'm not someone who normally buys into hype or "snake oil" products. This said, we use some essential oils that actually do great things and we won't be without them in the house.

Clove oil = great for tooth ache and other pain.

Peppermint oil = great for stomach ache and rubbing on areas that have pain. Helps with headaches when rubbed on temples, etc.

Tea Tree oil = great for skin ailments

Lavender oil = great for skin ailments and stress

Eucalyptus oil = great for muscle aches and pains.

There are others we've tried for various things that really work. One of the best is a concoction we found online to repel flying insects (house flies, mosquitoes, etc.) that works better than anything you can buy in the store.

Lot's of things I dismiss as snake oil but some essential oils work wonders in our house.

Some essential oils are very good. We use Eucalyptus oil in our steam shower and it smells wonderful. Also orange oil is useful for keeping cats out of the garden near the bird feeder.

When I was sporting that Boss beard, I mixed my own beard oil out of essential oils, other than that I don't have much use for them.

Some do smell nice, but fortunately I stink good so I don't need any help. Big Grin

Our 4 year old is the worst sleeper on the planet. It takes between 2 and 3 hours to get him to sleep then he generally wakes up twice throughout the night. Used to take an hour or so to get him back down but we are down to about 15 minutes on those. Then the kid will not sleep past 6 generally is up at 5. It is freaking miserable! The 2 year old on the other hand is awesome asks to go to bed between 7 and 7:30 and sleeps till 6.

My son who is almost 4, is a pain to get to bed depending on when he's eaten during the day (and random other factors because toddler), it could be something simple like that.

Lavender does have calming effects, but not sedative, and I don't know about "sleep blends," but the oils that people have mentioned like clove and peppermint do have actual uses. I actually grow my own Lavender, Peppermint, Chamomile, Oregano, and Lemon Balm to name a few. They do have actual uses.

Lavender smells nice, and might help, but I wouldn't expect it to solve the issue completely.
