The ignorant bastard was too stupid to know that Mexico is a country, not a race. Demand not that events should happen as you wish; but wish them to happen as they do happen, and you will go on well. -Epictetus

It was a little eye opening for me at BMT, and when stationed in the South. I wasn't racist, and had incorrectly thought if I treated people nicely and everyone the same, that it'd be returned. Boy was I wrong. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The trouble with our Liberal friends...is not that they're ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." It doesn't matter how good I am at chess, the pigeon will just take a shit on the board, strut around knocking over all the pieces and act like it won.. and in some cases it will insult you at the same time." Yep. There are good people and there are evil people. It's kind of like wasting time debating “misinformation”, “disinformation”, or “malinformation”. Those things do not exist. Information stands undefined. From that position there are only truth and lies. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

I came to GA about 27 years ago, I learned quickly to STFU about being a Yankee from MI. Being in sales, it immediately upped my income.

I was called a cracker once by a couple young ladies that were blocking the way while I was trying turn onto Lake Shore Drive when I lived in Chicago. I had no clue what it meant until moved to Florida. Either way, I don’t care.

Power is nothing without control |
I can’t recall being called a racial slur or something similar. I’ve gotten the generic stuff like asshole, but I don’t recall anything specifically racial or religious. I’m not saying it hasn’t happened, just that if it did it wasn’t memorable and I’ve forgotten about it. I do remember someone told me to ‘check your privilege’ once and I was mildly annoyed by it. So, I guess it annoys me a little to be slandered, but I don’t much care about mean names. EDIT: Now that I think about it, I guess you could say being called a nerd, or geek could be a slur against my ‘culture’. That has never bothered me a bit, but I don’t really consider them to have any negative connotations, so maybe they don’t count? - Bret

This may be detached reflection, but it seems to me, and shigawire seems to confirm it, that slurs only have the power we give them. Of course, I don't recognize any persecuted heritage in spite of family lore, so maybe the effect of the epithet is attenuated. Still, it seems like the offense loses it's sting if it is not received as such; like body armor that can reduce or eliminate the effectiveness of a projectile. I'm not particularly black or very brown, but I think as a matter of self defense, I'd remove the sting by refusing to be offended. Seems that could be turned on the offender by means of ridicule or the like. Or as is my method now, I just walk away as it were. Seems the best defense in combat is to not be there for a battle. Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
Nah, I'm about as white as it gets. Are there even any insulting ones for us? Honkey? Fucking HILARIOUS. I fill out forms with "Honkey" fairly regularly. Cracka/cracker? Bring it, big fan. I hear it in Chris Rock's voice. Wigger? Inaccurate, but funny just the same.

No. Something along the lines of… “I’ve been called far worse, by far better.” And if I don’t know you… It’s gonna be awful hard for me to give a couple of fucks about what comes out of your cake hole. I’m a retired cop. I’ve been called everything you could possibly think of. Even black epithets….and I’m white! I used to screw with the perps and pull out my note book, or get one out of the glovebox and start flipping thru it….while they were popping off… Heard that.. Yup, Next, Mmm hmmm Got that one Keep going … It used to infuriate some of them. Then I’d laugh and smile and tell ‘em thanks for the chuckle. Lots of colorful comments said to me when I was a cop. Usually from the back seat of the patrol car on the way to jail. All part of the fun! On a personal basis, I come for a long distingusied line of hillbillys and proud of it. If someone refers to my Appalachian heritage, I thank them for the compliment!
