My mistake, I misinterpreted something else I read.

I don't care for the super bowl, adulterated performances, nor for pre-recorded ones, which this one was.

For me the best national anthem performance was done by Whitney Houston. She sang it during a particularly high patriotic feeling in this country and way before the kneeling/woke garbage. She didn't butcher it with tons of meaningless voice inflections or look-at-me behavior. It might just be me but I swear I could see how much she loved this country in the expression on her face at the end. I have very little time for pop culture (in fact, no time now) but that performance was beautiful.

I would prefer that the artist actually sings the song like Chris Stapleton did instead of lip sinking it like Whitney but that’s just me.

I don't care for Houston's style of singing much at all - she slides around all over the notes, and is overly dramatic - melodramatic, even.

Give me a national anthem played by a military band, or a straight up, almost classical singer. Play it straight.

Didn't watch it so I don't have first hand experience but Whitney's version will be hard to top.

Even if Whitney herself sang yesterday, the Black anthem would ruin the experience. The NFL is not a great uniter that brings people together with differing opinions.

It's just entertainment.

The Hymn "Lift Every Voice and Sing" has been described by some as the "Black National Anthem", a title I don't recognize. It is a fine Hymn written by a Black man and is one of the many in the UMC Hymnal. I don't consider it a racist song, but it does project a positive attitude that may be important to minorities.

I decry performances that are described as the "Black National Anthem" -- the USA has only one National Anthem, which should be sung as it is written, not "enhanced" to fit a particular singer's psyche.

I hate it when they use the anthem to showcase a singing style it was never intended for. I still consider Meatloaf's performance from the 90's a perfect example of the song done right.

I like a plain old heartfelt…military band belting it out. Make you straighten your back, suck in that gut and be so damn proud to be an American… get that chest out! God Bless!

There is no "Black National Anthem". You want a separate national anthem for your race, and you call the rest of us racists??

Boy, I’d give a penny for her thoughts. She may be just relaxing or wondering WTF.

I’d be in the WTF group. At 75, I’m as woke as I need to be. I treat others as I want to be treated, I don’t care about anything else.

There is no reason to stand for "Lift Every Voice and Sing" unless one is in the group performing the Hymn. It has no official standing. Folks of color may stand in approval, but those actions would be by individuals on their own hook.

Not in the top 500.

I may have listened to the anthem more often than that, in which case the above number would grow. Wink

Like many here, I did not watch the game. I have seen the video of the National Anthem performance, though. I will say that it was OK -- he sang it straight, had the melody and the words right, and didn't put much personal spin on it. The tone was a little too "Country" for me (Leann Rimes did it better), but I can accept it.

I just watched it on You Tube. It was really good but the tempo was a little slow for me. Was Messmer the guy that used to sing the anthem before the Cub's games way back when? If so, he was one of the best.
