The problem in today's society is a lack of personal responsibility. The QB has a responsibility not to put his receiver in that position to get smoked by the safety. The receiver has responsibility to protect himself. On the flip side the defenders have a responsibility to tackle and force turnovers. Fumbles aren't caused by two hand touch. These players weren't forced into the sport. They chose to take the field and get paid a lot of money to do so. They know and accept the risks so let them play. This is a man's game with prices only men can pay. I can't speak on the prior hits from that safety but this is the highest level of play at full speed. WTF is he supposed to do? Slow down? Then he misses the tackle. Pull up? The rules specifically state that high hits are illegal. The safety put his shoulder into the textbook strike zone and the receiver put his head in it. That's not the safety's fault and I have zero sympathy for the wide receiver. Defenders can't target the head for obvious reasons. No one is disputing that. Defenders can't target the knees. I watched Brady and Gronkowski lose seasons because of low hits. I get it. That leaves from the thigh to shoulder. If a defender targets that zone regardless if the offensive player is upright or not then any deviation is on the player taking the hit. I played contact sports my whole life and every player on the field has a responsibility to protect themselves. If that means backing off and not making the play, so be it. Live to fight another day. Brady elaborated on this. Intimidation is an essential component to effective defenses. A defender who is a bruiser can effectively remove a part of the field because the punishment for making the catch isn't worth the yardage. It's why smart receivers don't fight for every last yard once they get the first down. Actions have consequences. When offensive players operate without consequence they're going to disregard their own safety like this receiver did thinking they'll either make the play or get the penalty. They need to RESPECT the 3rd option: that the defense did their job protecting that part of the field and NOT take the risk of making the catch because of the contact that is soon to follow. It's like the QB slide rule. As soon as the QB begins the slide any contact from the defense is an automatic penalty. What did QBs do? They waited until the last possible split second to initiate the slide knowing they'll get the extra yardage or a penalty because the defender didn't slow down. Then when the defenders slow down the QB reads it and doesn't slide and jukes the defender. Here's an idea: when the QB begins the slide any contact made by the defender within 1 or 2 seconds is fair game. Watch how many QBs will take the early slide knowing that if they want to get cute they will take the hit like anyone else. Isn't that what the rules are supposed to do? Player safety and all that? If I'm the receiver and I see the safety cover 2 over the top I'm not going to try and make that diving catch. Respect the defensive play call, regroup and make the catch when the defense is out of position.

Pro football is doomed, the calls for bans are just going to grow louder as injuries grow and brain science facts are published. Concussions leading to short lifespans is going to be harder to ignore.

Well it is doomed if reasonable people still think it’s a “mans game” and they “knew what they signed up for” and “grievous injuries are part of the game”. Yikes. Should we let high schoolers start spearing each other again because if you to play football that’s just part of the game? The funny thing is what I stated earlier. There are like 3 people on this forum and I’m not one of them that could take a legal hit at NFL speeds and walk off the field. These rules haven’t turned football into pattycake. They are common sense rules to, at best, lessen the chance of horrendous outcomes. Legal hits will still ruin lives. They are trying to stop the avoidable stuff. It’s still a “mans” game. I certainly wouldn’t tell Fred Warner he plays a pussy sport that has been turned into flag football. He could and would quickly dissuade me of my error in judgement. Lol If they didn’t try to limit avoidable injuries and situations where the likelihood of life altering collisions occur they would be taken apart lawsuit by lawsuit. And honestly they should be if they ignored the reality.

Nah, not even close to being doomed. If the injuries were such an issue then why is boxing still around. It is a sport with risks and freedom is about allowing that.

Oh I'm sorry cupcake did I offend you with the truth? Football is a man's game. I don't care how much of a badass a woman thinks she is but she won't survive the physical punishment over the course of 1 season let alone several. If you can't wrap your mind around the biological fact that men are vastly physically superior to women for such a game then I can't help you. What you failed to comprehend in my post is that when the rules heavily favor the offense the offensive players are going to push the limit and disregard their safety because the rules are on their side. I love how you completely neglected to address the whole paragraph on personal responsibility as well as the literal Greatest Player to ever take the field backing up those points. I can see why Para rides your ass the way you post. Passive aggressive non nonsensical bullshit that doesn't even apply to the discussion at hand. For example: No one is saying high schoolers should be taking life altering hits. We're talking about the NFL yet you had to throw that in there to try and make whatever point you're trying to make. Stay on topic sport.

I neither love it nor hate it. I used to be a lover. Take a look at real viewership. Many hate the social justice shit the NFL pushes. FYI the Texans suck shit, I loved the Oilers

There's no chance this will happen, because of the weird obsession with games like this, but I wish it were true. Oh, how I wish it were so. As a society, we would be far better off without this garbage; no professional or even college sports. The road should end at the high school level, and with the way high school players are farmed for college, perhaps we shouldn't have even that. If you're a half-wit who can run fast with a little ball, you might end up rich and influential, and that is outright obscene. Can't read or spell, can't do basic math, don't know a damn thing about history or science or anything useful, can't do anything to aid society, but if you can handle a little ball, the sky's the limit. Utterly obscene. The way we as a society honor and revere stupid people with what are useless skills- this is one of the reasons why we are where we are. It's criminal. No one- NO ONE should care in the least about this stuff, much less make these fools into heroes and give them our money.

You don't ever want to do this here. You don't want to hit a man when he's down and you most certainly don't want to use me to bludgeon another member. Let your argument speak for itself, and don't go sniping at a member who feels they may be in a position where it is disadvantageous for them to defend themselves.

I am all for personal accountability. I also see the need for rules to regulate/enforce behavior when people fail to demonstrate said accountability. We apply that concept across most aspects of life, football should be no exception. If your QB does throw to the receiver and he is in a terrible position to defend himself and catch the ball, I suspect he will try to make the catch anyway. He is hardwired to make the catch, his contract depends on him making these catches, he might not even know he is about to be hit, etc. We can argue whether they have applied these rules fairly or even if they are the correct rules at all. However, we all just watched that one particular play from 2 very good angles. That receiver was laid out parallel to the deck, he wasn't going to land anywhere but on his belly, and that DB launched himself and hit his head with his shoulder. He could have downed him easily by contact without destroying him. I am surprised that we are actually arguing about whether that hit should or shouldn't be legal. I am staunchly in the corner of that hit should not be legal. And it is not according to the NFL. Season ending ban? Like I said, I have no idea if that is justified because they say it is for multiple previous illegal hits that none of us can speak to. I would love to see this slide show of bad hits. This one was bad. In my opinion. And yes, I think saying "this is a mans game" as justification for not trying to curtail career or life ending injuries where possible is tone deaf and out of place since we are discussing a game. Once again, just my opinion.
