On the same breath that Walmart (WMT) announced that it is raising its hourly wages to $11 and giving employees bonuses due to tax reform, the world’s largest retailer also revealed it’s closing 63 Sam’s Club locations across the U.S., which will ultimately lay off thousands of workers.

The news of the exact locations was first reported by Business Insider, but later followed by a tweet from Sam’s Club’s official account.

“After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we’ve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and we’re committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition,” the company tweeted.

A spokesperson for Walmart did not immediately return FOX Business’ request for additional comment on the store closures.

However, many customers and workers took to social media to complain about how the company handled the situation with many of them saying they weren’t given any notice of the shutdown and many stores were abruptly closed on Thursday morning.

Several local media outlets in Texas, New York, Virginia and Arizona confirmed that stores closed on Thursday.

A Walmart official told Business Insider that 10 of the affected stores will be turned into e-commerce distribution centers, and employees of those will have the opportunity to reapply for positions at their locations.

A Sam’s Club spokesperson added that its pharmacies will continue to stay open for at least two weeks, and they plan to work with each state’s Board of Pharmacy to “help guide this transition."

The store we frequent the most is on the list. I guess we'll have to investigate CostCo.

They are closing a bunch in Illinois - and I think the three they are closing in Washington State are the only 3 located there.

That should put 14 cashiers out of work.

One of those is one we used to shop at a lot. When we go home to visit my MIL, that's where we always got her some supplies from. That town has been hit very hard in the past 10-15 years with businesses leaving.

The racist, man hating liberal who ran Sam's Club into the ground retired in February, I guess the new CEO had to make some changes.

The 2 they closed in Cincinnati did not even give notice to employees prior to closing.
So the local news is reporting.

the one in Richmond VA that is closing is in the hood, and likely a low volume store for them,

and new Walmart supercenter opened about 3 miles from it, and is setting records in police calls for the area

And the Trump and Republican Party haters are out in force. “Pay raises by closing stores,” etc. Nevermind that the increased wages will, over time, far surpass the dollars realized from Sam’s Club closings.

I can’t help but wonder if some of those lost market share because of Costco in the same area.

The three in the Seattle area closed this morning. Employees received notice when they read the sign on the door.

The one a few miles from me isn't on the list. I wonder how it stays in business because it is never busy. The main thing I get from Sam's Club is gasoline. I do most of my shopping at Costco because they have better merchandise, faster checkout, and friendlier staff.

I'm surprised they are closing the one on Westheimer.
But then, I have not been to that area for years.
