Simple matter of cost analysis and return on investment (which happens to be what I am teaching this quarter).

likely

the RVA store is in an economically depressed area,
would be willing to be they were given some tax breaks for building in the area and those have run out,

we have had the same number of Costco's for years (2) and one BJ's club,
meanwhile we have about 6 or so Sam's left

There are 3 others staying open in Memphis.
The one closing here on Getwell I felt underdressed without at least a G19 or 1911 with three spare mags and a backup gun with at least one extra mag for it.

I think for most retail, employees are responsibile for more "inventory shrinkage" than customers.

well in my small town ...they are closing mine...as being in upper retail management...i know it is all about dollars and cents...and having worked for Walmart while i was in college...these stores operate on a very small profit margin compared to the main stores..it will be a shame to see this one go....almost everyone i know shops there....

Get some of the liberals I deal with in your class.
True to their form, they were quick to connect the tax cut with the pay raise AND the store closing. "Typical. Tax cuts for corporations don't mean more jobs. They just mean richer CEO's and stockholders."

I had to ask if they think people at Sam's Club didn't consider whether they weren't going to earn returns or insufficient returns on those stores they are closing? Do they think Sam's Club said, "This store is making us money but, hey, we got a tax cut so let's close the store!"

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

We had both Sam's and Costco memberships. We debated for years whether or not to dump one. They closed the Sam's near us. Didn't like the one next closest. Problem solved.

The one closing in Irondale Alabama is literally a stone's throw from the 2nd-richest city in Alabama, Mountain Brook. One of my former employers shopped there quite regularly, and the store was / is always busy. Maybe they are building a bigger one nearby. Just my 2 cents worth.

It’s a simple matter of being able to make a profit. Management must constantly evaluate each location, and at some point make the call to quit that location and try somewhere else, etc.

Who knows why in any given location that the store isn’t succeeding? Maybe the location is not easily accessed. It was when the store was built but traffic patterns have changed. The customer demographics have changed. Competition has moved in. The lease terms are about to change, rent is going up, etc.

Walmart develops a location, with their store, outlying pads to lease to others, etc and offers them to investors on triple net leases, usually 20-25 years with extensions. Because Walmart is the tenant, these are very desirable and sell at a lower cap rate. Options to extend might be less favorable, maintenance is in reasing, etc.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

They closed the Sams I go to. The Indy East Washington Street. It took me a half an hour to get there. The others will be 45 minutes to an hour away so I guess I'll take the membership refund. Costco is the same, they are all 45 minutes away at a minimum.

Ha, I'm hearing that with the new raise, MANY folks will now make too much money to continue receiving govt benefits. So that many folks that were cheering at the thought of a raise, are now going to make LESS money, when you account for the lost .gov benefits.

Don't let Mountain Brook hear you say they are only the second richest in the state! I've spent a good bit of time in the Irondale Sam's, and I don't see many of the MB crowd in there. It's a small, oddly designed store anyway. Hopefully they'll build a bigger one in a better location.

Well, I was never a Sam's Club member, but I drove past one of the ones on the list in Renton twice daily for years. The parking lot was never more than half full at most and often much less than that. There's a number of Costcos in the area that are pretty much always jam-packed at almost all hours of operation.

We became Costco members instead after investigation the choices and haven't regretted it. Walmart tried to beat Costco at their own game and lost very badly.

I can confirm that at least two, if not all three in the Seattle area were in shithole neighborhoods. Never went to the one in Seattle itself, Renton is sketchtastic and parts of Auburn, and neighboring Kent are also.

After looking it up, I just realized after we moved, I drove past the Walmart in Auburn also for about three years as part of my commute. Yeah, that's an interesting area also. One of the scarier parts of 18 in either direction to boot. That one is located right by an exit that frequently has onramp and offramp accidents that shut down the whole area.
