Birth certificate and Real ID have to match first and last names exactly. The confusion comes in with nicknames--Jack, Ted, etc. You are called Jack all your life, but your birth name is John-- this is a no go. TSA goes by the letter of the law. You make the airline reservation Jack Smith and your Real ID reads John Smith. You pull out your CCW that has a photo ID and shows Jack Smith == NOT recognized as a form of legal ID.

yea it was a problem for me, took a couple times, a pita. Some of my bills said "Dr." while others said "Drive" as part of my street name. The ones that didn't match were not accepted. Stupid idiots. Prolly best if the people in charge of processing Read IDs can't figure that out, else they might give Real IDs to anyone regardless of what paperwork they bring in, since IQ isn't anything you can fix, it's hardwired, so hope your place has more capable people. Though in all honesty they told me it was policy, which doesn't surprise me, in which case the people doing the work were smarter than their superiors who made such a stupid policy. The weren't impressed by my original birth certificate either, go figure. I suppose I could have gotten one easier if I was an illegal alien. Gotta love state governments.

The knucklehead at the DMV was more concerned that my original , ancient Social Security card said " Not to be used for identification " on it . They don't do that anymore but he wouldn't accept it. Then why does the website say that a SS card is an acceptable document ? He told me to order a new card . I left there and went to a different DMV office . No problem there .

When I got my RealID I presented a white-on-black embossed birth certificate issued in Missouri. I’ve heard that such documents are no longer accepted here in California.

I don’t have an actual Birth Certificate. What I have is a Certification of Birth Registration. It is an embossed document attesting that a Birth Certificate had been registered for me.
When I went for my Real ID, there was a person there training clerks. She asked if I would mind if she used the document to instruct her trainees. What the heck, why not?
There is a sentence at the end of the first paragraph that reads “…it is legal evidence of age and citizenship.”
She showed them all the last sentence and told them that the sentence was removed from registration certificates in 1955.
Apparently they’ll accept a registration certificate up till then, after that date one has to have their actual birth certificate.
I wonder what my actual birth certificate looks like.

Tried to get one years ago when this first came up.
PennDOT would not accept my SS card because it is laminated. I told them it's been laminated since the 1950's, that's why you can still read it. Sorry, can't accept. I haven't been back.

Not really an issue, but my birth certificate lists two middle names where I went through most of my life with one middle name, which is what I used with the military and soc sec.

Hasn’t caused any problems including medical care at the VA.

Well shit,

Turns out that if you move to New York, you wouldn't even need a name:

You should be fine.

My issue was that they wanted a full-page birth certificate. Where I was born, they issued ones that are a half page, still had the seal and everything, but were not a full page. Since I have a passport, that wasn't an issue. A passport covers some of the other documentation.

Mine is laminated also. I think my parents did it back when I got it.

For some reason several years ago the DMV would not accept my recent bank statement or other mail as supporting documents... (I had my then current DL, passport, SS card which was laminated, DOD retired card). Was asked to present another government issued card with address, etc. Had to use my concealed carry permit card as proof.

I got a REAL DL back in NC a decade ago, took all the things up to the DMV. In and out.

Moved to Texas, gotta get a new DL. Bring passport, new house electric bill, SS card, cable bill, few other bills. TX DPS (DMV) looks at the NC dl-issue me a TX one after scanning all my items. GTG.

FF 4 years and where I’m supposed to be able to renew online I get a letter saying I gotta go in. Make an appointment. Go in with ALL the things, passport, birth cert,SS card (I have 2-lost one for a few years and then it came back) bills, ret. USCG ID, DD214..

Show the girl I ALREADY have a star on my DL. She looks thru the file, cherry picks my birth cert and says-someone up high in the driver’s license chain of command said everyone who doesn’t have a birth cert in their file is being forced to come in and provide it.

I had the same thing happen. My license renewed in April, but the expiring one had the gold star. I go in and say I want to renew my license, so they ask for it and say I don't have a certificate on file.

Yeah, when I got my TX DL when I moved, I had no idea at the time, but it was Real ID compliant, has the gold star in the upper right hand corner. Easy Peasy.

My license was just up for renewal so I finally decided to take the plunge on a Real ID. I looked at the list of documents needed and gathered my birth certificate, my SS card, and my vehicle registration. Having heard all of the stories, I also brought my voter registration card and my last property tax receipt, just in case. When I pulled it all out at the counter, the guy took my birth certificate and my voter registration and said I was good to go. I do believe that, a lot of the time, it is up to the person at the window and this guy appeared to be a supervisor.

My Passport, Birth Certificate, and DL all have my full name with fill middle.

Everything else has middle initial. Didn't have any issues at BMV but I don't remember which things I brought as proof. Might have had SS card, and some other proof of residence but I don't remember.

I also have Global Entry, which comes with TSA-Pre, an APEC card, and Clear. I'm fingerprinted, face-scanned, eye-scanned, and whatever else they could get without a blood sample.

After seeing how things work in other countries, a national ID card would be a good idea. Would make a lot of things easier, and allow the feds to control who gets one, which is a lot better than letting commmie states give ID to illegals.
