Update on Page 3

After being staunchly opposed to getting it for a long time I have decided to finally get mine soon.

I am gathering up all my docs but may have an issue and wanted to see if anyone here had a similar issue? It seems the REAL ID people are very hung up on everything matching as far as a name goes.

Here is my possible issue:

Birth Certificate and SS card have my first name, FULL middle name of John, and last name

Everything else: W-2, DL, utility bills etc has my first name, middle INITIAL of "J", and last name on it.

Are they going to give me a hard time for this?

I didn't have a hard time with middle initial and full middle name. My stuff is very inconsistent.

No.

The Birth Certificate shows your identity, the rest shows our legal residence.

That's all they need to combine for your "real ID"

I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

Should be all you need. No problem.

Recently did the same, the clerk asked me about the middle name/initial mis-match, I just said that I gave up using my full middle name back in the 70's, and there was no more said about it. I suspect it mostly depends on what kind of mood the processing clerk is in that day.

Probably true. Same about which documents they’ll accept as proof of residence. On my first trip to the DMV a letter sent from the DMV to my home wasn’t accepted as evidence of that.

There were no problems (i.e., never brought up) when I got mine in Nov. 2020.

I had my DL, SS card, bank statement and electric bill. Electric bill had my correct address but under it had Lot # 158.
She asked what's this lot#? I tried to explain it to her, nope, had to go home and find something else.
This was very shortly after they started the Real ID. Fun at the DMV!

Yeah, probably that. My birth certificate has my legal name on it, but my utility bills don't. They didn't bat an eye, or ask.

Just wait 'til your Wife decides she wants a 'Real ID'. Assuming she changed her name, she'll need a certified copy of your Marriage License, as the name her Birth Certificate won't match up with everything else...Otherwise No 'Gold Star' for her! Roll Eyes

Not that we really care all that much but...It's 4+ years later and my wife STILL doesn't have a 'Real ID'.

Getting Tabitha's Real ID, since she's adopted, took her passport, adoption papers and social security card.

Wasn't a big deal when I went to get it updated several years ago. I believe I brought in my passport, my current DL and the notification letter, and they were good with that....then again, I'm in California where the DMV is notorious for poor record keeping and issuing CDL's to illegal's. I didn’t have to do any of that. Didn’t even have to leave the house. They sent me a new one from online request.

You should be just fine. My recommendation would be to take more proof of ID than they require if at all possible for the "just in case" possibilities. The process is pretty painless unless you don't have the correct documents.

CA biotch at the DMV felt my retired ID wasn’t a valid ID because, "anyone can retire from the military."

I now refuse to give CA any additional money for a Real ID.

As cumbersome as the process was, I don’t recall any monetary charge.

Real ID is a federal requirement the states are mandated to implement. Trying to get a standardized ID across all states was one of the legislative pushes post-9/11. If you plan to fly or access govt property, you'll need it.

I used passport card for all of that, before my DL was reissued as Real ID. In fact, I continue to use passport card for most ID requirements, as it has less personal information than DL. Just name, photo, and DOB. No address or any other information.
