It doesn't even have to have a purpose. They lie reflexively. If their mouth is open something has to come out. Examples abound.

I'm not sure what's more ridiculous, the immediate screaming on conventional and social media of "Russian missiles strike Poland, may cause WW 3!!!", or the subsequent screaming in alternate media of "fake news about Russian missiles nearly caused WW 3!!!". Even the Polish government, which has been most enthusiast about supporting Ukraine against Russia because, Russia, went from "may have been Russian missiles, but no confirmation yet" right after the incident to "likely was Ukrainian SAMs" literally overnight. This is not USS Maine redux; noones gonna let fly with nukes just because there's a little stir among talking heads. There were worse incidents during the Cold War.
