If he is near a Main VA Hospital, have him try and go to the Benefit Office and request for a replacement Veteran ID card. He can also
Go to Release of Information Office (ROI) and request copies
Of his personal records. I would try Benefits Office first and try to get a Veteran Replacement ID.

Update on this situation. Finally received a copy of his birth certificate in late January. He is in the process of getting a replacement Retired Military I.D. card from Scott AFB. He is at the same time trying to clear up a bunch of warrants and had to spend 2 weeks in January in the Phelps County lockup.

I was flabbergasted when he got a bill today for $1,000 from Phelps County for his room and board! I've never heard of such a thing! Seems totally outrageous to lock someone behind bars and send them a bill like this!

WRT jail payments, I worked for a NC city but I had heard of the Sheriff charging inmates $10/day for their time. I dunno how it works but it’s not unheard of

In this case it was $71 and change per day.

So if you don't pay the bill will they arrest you again? Charging you to be locked up made me say WTF. While I’m assuming it is legal it doesn’t make sense, especially if it is pre-conviction.

Sheriff's department where I worked sent the bill to collections if you didn't pay up. TBH, $15 a day wouldn't keep the lights on, much less pay any real bills. People who wanted work release coughed up $50 a day.

All part of the deterrent. Don't want to pay? Don't commit the crime. Simple.

I would start at your local police station and explain that all your documents have been lost. It would probably help if you and at least one other person could vouch for his identity. The police can then write a police report which you could take to your local DMV to get a replacement driver’s license.

I would start with the replacement driver’s license first and then start working on everything else.

I can see that if convicted but what if the charges are dropped or found not guilty, do you get a refund? Intrest?

I can't answer for anywhere else, but in our jail, only those serving time had to pay for their keep.

Well, here's a final update. My son, committed suicide Sunday morning, Feb 12th, 2023, in our house in the master bathroom. I thought things were going extremely well as everything was coming together and the future was looking bright. The last bit of restored I.D. came in the mail today.

There were absolutely zero red flags not only for me but for anyone around him the last couple months. Now I know what the utter depths of despair feel like.

Now we have lost another military veteran far, far too soon.

I had not followed this thread after day one and what a shock when I looked in again.
I'm so sorry and can't imagine.
Prayers for you and your family. Finding the words are a struggle, I'm sure for all of us.
