Yes indeed.

This used to be the quintessential American trait of character that separated Americans from all other nationalities, that gritty sense of self-reliance spawned in the habitual exercise of freedom and personal responsibility which go hand in hand.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

I prefer this and trust no one for it.

Having learned this at a young age, in a manner no child should.

Oddly, when things go bad, I find I am in a familiar place.

I have spent my life, cleaning my rifle.

Smile This song reminds me of this thread.

I keep a weather eye on the horizon, back to the wall
I like to know who's coming through the door, that's all
It's the old army training kicking in
I'm not complaining, it's the world we live in

Blarney and Malarkey, they're a devious firm
Take you to the cleaners and let you burn
The help is breaking dishes in the kitchen, thanks a lot
We hired the worst dishwasher this place ever got

Hidden below the radar
They want to spoil our fun
In the meantime
I'm cleaning my gun

Remember it got so cold ice froze up the tank
We lit a fire beneath her just so she would crank
Keep a weather eye on the horizon
Tap the stone glass now and then
We got a case of old damnation
For when you get here, my friend

We can have ourselves
A party before they come
In the meantime
I'm cleaning my gun

We had women and a mirror ball, we had a DJ
He used to eat pretty much all that came his way
Ever since the goons came in took apart the place
I keep a tire iron in the corner just in case

Hang a little magic bullet on a little chain
Keep me safe from the chilly winds and out of the rain
We're gonna might need bullets should we get stuck
Any which way, we're gonna need a little luck

You can still get gas in heaven
And drink in kingdom come
In the meantime
I'm cleaning my gun

I'm seriously behind in this...I find my mind wandering to which brand of pistol to upgrade to. A 30 shot 22 mag or a 762.39 AK. Going to have to look into as far as size of mags and weapons.

Both Wink

Next up for me is the CZ Scorpion. I have a four part class starting the end of this month for Defensive pistol. And I will be taking the same for rifle. They offer 3 levels and I think once I accomplish all 6 levels I will feel better about my abilities to defend and protect both at home and out. The training never ends though.

If it won't matter in 5 years don't give it more than 5 minutes.

No child should ever go through what you endured, sir. My heart is with you.

**************************************

Got home, yesterday, and my wife was talking to me as I was putting away my work things and changing to something a bit more comfortable. As she watched me attach the holstered pistol that had been with me all day to the belt for my jeans, I noticed that she did not even lose stride in her conversation about our rescue group and also (especially) about Paris. Usually, she feels compelled to make a comment.

Someone else mentioned, "when I have pants on, I am armed." Well, it's the same at our home, "I am loaded for bear" as Para said much earlier in this conversation. It is with me as much as possible and it is on me when we are at home and when we are out and about. My wife knows well now that we are all potential targets and she seemingly now also sees my being armed at home as very natural.

Her folks have been talking again about coming for a visit and I would love to see those two dear souls, again. I love them. I think my MIL would raise an eyebrow or two, if/when she finds out, but I think my wife would quickly explain it all. I think my FIL would get it straight away, as he owned rifles for hunting, which in Japan is not a very common thing at all. Actually, I want to take him to the range and let him enjoy shooting everything I have. He is now in his early 80s, but still full of life and drives the van for the local group (someone driving in Japan at that age is probably as unusual as someone having rifles there).

Yesterday, I called one of my colleagues who works in Paris, to see if he was okay. He was and those at work and their families are okay as well, but he is fully a French socialist, I think. He seemed to be taking all of this in stride and wanted to see a French version of the Patriot Act there. He said he is not religious, also. I was a little taken aback by that statement, as it sort of came from nowhere. I sensed no anger from him whatsoever. It seemed I was more upset about it than he. We had a similar conversation in January, after the Charlie Hebdo attack...

Not only did my rifle get the proverbial cleaning but my better half, who has been aloof to firearms for as long as I've known her, has recently joined a woman's gun club and has asked for the procurement of a second AR for her.
Her rifle will be clean.

Isn't that a wonderful feeling? When Mrs DF directed me to get one for her, it nearly brought tears to my eyes. It was a religious experience for me, really. Of course now when I get a gadget or tweek my rifle, she asks if hers is equally equipped. D'oh!!! Smile

...as I sit here listening to scanner feed about a mass shooting in a state where you are figuratively not permitted to even think about guns, much less carry one to protect yourself - I find myself upgrading from the Shield to the 229 for tomorrow's daily carry.

Funny you should mention this. My partner was born Canadian and became an American citizen in 2011. She has always actively avoided my guns. Happy that I have them as we live out in the country, and conscious that I always carry and grateful for it, but uninterested herself. Two days ago, she talked about getting familiar with a shotgun. Not ready for handguns yet, leery of rifles, but is starting to talk about learning shotgun. I couldn't be happier!

It really is a beautiful thing to watch a partner move toward the desire to defend him/herself. Tonight Mrs df and I went to dinner. As we chose our table, she stopped and changed her mind. she moved to a different table that had a better view of entrances. I smiled to myself and took my seat. The way the floor was set up there was no way to see both exits from one place. she sat down and said you watch the one over my shoulder and I'll watch the one over yours. It was a beautiful thing. She's still not ready to carry concealed all the time. I think it's because she knows I am. So I tell her what condition the gun is in and how many rounds she has if something happens to me. Except for the garage door incident, I really love my wife Big Grin

Yesterday I had a private rifle lesson with an old friend/competitive shooter/cop/trainer. To my surprise, my accuracy skills are still very good. This was mainly to knock the rust off my rifles, which I don't have the opportunity to shoot very often. What I did learn, was basic transitioning and tactics as well as what I need to do to make my rifles more user friendly and equipped.

My wife and I did some walk throughs this morning at medium speed to just refamiliar ourselves with some 'what ifs'.

It went pretty well and I am certain that if we keep up the training, we will be ready for a lot of potential situations.

be well---all of you.

Well, today I took my soon to be 17 y/o son to the range to run our home defense rifle. While this rifle is not new, I have done much work to it over the past few weeks. Replaced the barrel with a 14.5 inch Colt M4 barrel with Larue rail, pinned an AAC 51t suppressor mount, replaced the bcg, and moved an Aimpoint to the rifle. Once sighted in, I managed to shoot a 1/2" five round group, with four rounds touching. I am completely satisfied with this rifle which sits at the ready in a quick access safe.

This afternoon, I cleaned, loaded, and secured my rifle. Just one more layer in the defense and security of my home and family.
