I'll be honest, Gentlefolk, and admit that I haven't a clue why a basic part of our everyday education, no matter WHERE you live, can possibly be imbued with an agenda of its own, but it seems that there ARE people in the USA who believe it to be a fact of life.
As such, I'd be grateful if somebody here can take a couple of minutes to explain to me just what this is all about. I'm reading the words, but they are just not making any sense. I'm not [that] stupid, although things in this 21st century DO puzzle me from time to time. I have a Masters and two other degrees in very technical and mind-bendingly obscure subjects, and can hold a decent level of conversation in four other languages than the one I'm using to write this now.
So please don't be afraid of using long words to explain what I'm reading in the article. Who knows, it might explain that because I'm not very keen on math, it's actually because my dislike is racially motivated.

Yes, all of the idiocy of the left, this is among the most idiotic. It doesn't make sense to any thinking person for the simple reason that it doesn't make any sense. For the intended purposes of the left- to dismantle this society- it doesn't have to make any sense. They just have to find pathways to indoctrinate young minds and to do their best to infuriate and confound those who disagree with their insane views and hateful purposes.

Possible reasons why someone can't tell if 1001 is a prime number without paper/pencil/calculator/smartphone:
Didn't study the subject matter.
Wasn't paying attention in class.
Got put in a higher learning class by accident.
Not really good at math.
THAT'S RACIST !!!!
Most of these involve personal responsibility (and not being able to divide by 77). One is because of the 'system'.
They did say Portland... nevermind.

I just started season 5 of The Wire. If you don't understand the issue of lower test scores, I suggest watching season 4 of The Wire. The problem is easy to see if you watch season 4.

The inevitable results of all this can be seen in the article linked to in the first post:
quote:
This framework has hurt Seattle students.
As noted in Luke Rosiak's book Race To The Bottom, black students' state math exam scores in these pilot programs plummeted to shocking lows. After years of consistent progress at John Muir Elementary, for example, the passing rate for black students fell from 28 percent to 18 percent after the introduction of the ethnic studies framework.
Despite the results, the district doubled down.
What will happen when these students are competing for acceptance by universities, and what chances will they have in obtaining jobs (out in the real world, not in a learning environment filled with racist fantasies) which require heavy emphasis on mathematical skills?
What it comes down to is that those who are pushing this racist nonsense simply do not care about these children or their futures. What they care about is creating a new crop of angry, bitter racists who blame white people for their lack of ability to obtain high-paying jobs.

I don't think this is that. These "teachers" know what they are doing to these kids. They know they are hurting them with this idiotic racist bullshit. They can see the results of it in the significantly lower math scores, yet they keep on pushing it. This is not "low expectations". This is the outright brainwashing of young people so that they can become part of these hateful "teachers" racist, angry, bitter army.
It seems to me that this qualifies as child abuse.
Personally I think this is simply about control. Stupid, unfocused, and angry people are far easier to manipulate and control then intelligent, thinking, people are.

I've not dived into this and have zero understanding of how one can teach math (any math really) any different than making sure times-tables, division and other basic structures are used progressing into cosines, proofs, calculus, etc... It appears that language usage, phrasing and example types are more concerning than actual comprehension; after all math as a whole is an exercise in problem solving.
As we all know, academia at all levels is the domain of the Left. There's no question that Leftist dogma and ideology is at the heart of our education institutions.
