We require a, very, basic math test for new hires at the plant.

They are free to use a calculator/their phones, and it is not timed.

We require them to add, multiply, and divide 3 digit numbers. (Divide the table of numbers by 2. Multiply them by 3, etc.)

90% don't bother doing it, or fail to make a passing grade.

They literally cannot pass 3rd grade math, with a calculator. All have HS diplomas.

I live in a conservative county where the three R's are still taught in elementary school, and it is the top rated public school system in the state. You must get the fundamentals or all the other BS doesn't count. Our governor just signed a bill that requires the schools in Florida to teach basic financial management as a condition of graduation from HS. Stuff like balancing a checkbook and making a budget. It has already been suggested that the law is racist, likely because it involves math.

The same subculture that spawns violence also spawns illiteracy. Unfortunately literacy is not a valued commodity with a significant portion of the population. I have interviewed a number of lifers in prison and many are surprisingly bright, but functionally illiterate. They seem to go hand in hand. We are producing generation after generation of people who have none of the requisite skills to function in society and fall back into the pattern of crime, violence, and incarceration, further enabled by a government handing out free shit. I have grown so weary of race hustlers and politicians placing blame everywhere but where it belongs.

One guy I knew in my Senior class, who graduated with the rest of us, was functionally illiterate.

The only way he graduated was with ROTC credits.

There's no way he could have run a calculator if they had existed back then and I know he couldn't do first grade math.

Being able to double a recipe, take an inventory, etc seems to require a college grad...

I know people aren't ACTUALLY that dumb. I long for the day when I can automate out everyone, except for my small core group, which would be assets no matter what kind of business I was in.

I do not get it. There seems to be a deliberate push to make their own lives, and everyone else's around them, as hard as possible, while at work.

ROTC? Hmmm . . .

That would explain some of the officers in my squadron.

This is no joke; completely factual. I bought something in a nearby Goodwill. It was only $2 so I opted to pay with 3 ones in cash. The early 20-something gal at the register was clearly struggling at how to add up change to make the amount I was owed. She had to ask me what coins she needed to give me. I almost said “3 twenty dollar bills, a five, and 2 quarters” as a joke. It was very sad.

Since we apparently have a coin shortage along with everything else we're suffering though today, I gave a twenty something girl working the register at a convenience store $5.10 on a $2.90 bill, and the total mental meltdown that created was simply mind boggling. Note to self: Never try and help out again.

That poor girl is not the only one who is confused. I don't understand it either.

You owed $2.90 and you gave her $5.10? That means that the change due to you was $3.80. Confused

Are these idiots who make up this shit going to just walk down a list and enumerate everything in life?

Math is racist? So is English. So is chemistry. Biology obviously. Physics as well.

Good god, can was just skip to the end: Life is racist. Deal with it.

Jeez. I felt like a moron for stopping at calculus, but now I am relieved to learn I am smart. I only use math nowadays to calculate ballistic coefficients.

You are both confusing me. If he owed $2.90, change from a $5 bill would be $2.10 By giving her $5.10, he would get $2.20 back. LOL

I don't believe this to be only an "administrative" issue.

Where are the parents? They have a stake in their kids education. Shame on them if they ignore the problem.

They should do real life math.

The best I could get out of the original argument and argument was that some progressives feel that math was used to segregate and keep down certain segments of society.... assuming this is true... well, yes math is pretty much used in everything for good or bad... I think a whole of talk about nothing is really what was going on.

Eric Hoffer once said, “Every great cause becomes a movement, then a business and finally degenerates into a racket”. I’ll add a fourth phase: “…and then lunacy”.

You might get some insight by reading Kurt Vonnegut’s short story, “Harrison Bergeron”.
