The recent car threads had me thinking back to some of my prior cars. What your car history? 1982 Mercedes-Benz 240D Bought in 2002 with >300k miles on it (stopped odometer). Hindsight, was a perfect car for a 16 year old driver. As I recall it had something like 64hp when it was new, to date, still the slowest car I've ever driven. Drove it for about 9 months. Was rear ended by an F150 on a light rain day as I was slowing for a stop light. Heard the squealing tires & looked in the rear view mirror in time to watch the trunk fold in half. Luckily no one was in front of me & the cross traffic light hadn't changed yet. Despite the hard hit, you could still open & close the back door unimpeded. Did something like $7k in damage to a car that was worth about $2k. 1982 Mercedes-Benz 300SD Bought in 2003 to replace the totalled 240D. Again with over 300k miles & a stopped odometer. The turbo-diesel I5 had a bit more pep than the non-turbo 240D. It wasn't until we were selling it that we had a buyer notice that the wastegate was stuck open, so it was only quicker because it had an extra cylinder. Drove it through high school & sold it before heading off to college. 1987 Chevrolet Suburban Silverado Was an extra car we had in our family. Drove it in the interim when the above 240D had transmission issues & the time between the 240D & 300SD. We bought it in 1994 & still have it. It's since been retired to ranch duty & lives down in S TX on our property. Has also been converted into a crew cab pickup (rear roof & windows cut out, tailgate removed, pickup cab back welded in. 1996 Saturn SL2 Purchased about a month before I headed off to college in 2004. IIRC, we bought it from a coworker of my dad's that had replaced the engine & was just using it as an RV tow-car. 3 accidents in this one. Lost traction in a 270* exit ramp in Austin & slid into the guardrail, light fender (plastic) damage & alignment thrown off. Lost rear traction in a lane change & slid into the trailer of a semi. Pure luck on this one, as it could've been much worse. Car slid in the rear (still unsure how, was not speeding) and pointed me right at the side of the trailer. Countersteered & hit the jack of the trailer, and luckily spun outward from the trailer & stopped partially on the sidewalk. Fender, hood & 'frame' damage where the jack hit the car, A/C never worked right after that either. No injuries, luckily. The one that did it in: On my way to class after moving back to Houston. Waiting to pull into a parking lot near a large high school during the morning rush. Cars in the opposite direction made a gap & waved me through. Didn't realize the 3rd lane was empty & got t-boned by an SUV, about where the R rear door & fender meet.. Similar to the 240D accident, I looked over right before he hit me & watched it happen. Car executed a rapid 360*, couple broken windows & tossed my speaker box from the trunk (landed about 25ft from the car). The Saturn was a good car, did quite a bit of autocross in it & had a good time beating some kids in more expensive cars with a bone stock, automatic, Saturn. 1997 Honda Civic EX Coupe Replaced the Saturn with something a bit more fun to drive. 5 speed manual, 2 doors, and a near 8k redline. Prior experience tamed my driving down a bit & the Civic lasted a good while without too many major problems until the transmission started going out. Threw in a new trans & clutch, and drove it for a while longer until I got tired of the heavy clutch & manual transmission in heavy Houston traffic. Sold & decided to get a car with an automatic. 1996 Infiniti J30 An interesting one & to this day don't recall seeing too many on the roads. Similar to how this Lexus IS300 was like a 4-door non-turbo Supra, the J30 was effectively a 4-door, automatic, non-turbo 300ZX (drivetrain-wise). Was a fun car & handled pretty well. Had Reverse fail in the transmission, and Infiniti wanted $4k to replace it. Found a used trans with a warranty via LQK for $300 & got a mechanic to replace it for $150. Sold the car shortly afterward. Hurrican Ike came through Houston & the >$4/gal for Premium was too much for a broke college student. 1993 Honda Accord SE Inherited from my sister when she got a new car. My dad had bought it from a customer (he was working in svc at a Honda dealer at the time) with a blown engine, for $200. Put a good engine in it & drove it through the rest of college. Donated to a family in need that my parents knew. 2000 Acura TL From the era of the 'glass' transmissions at Honda/Acura. Bought off a friend of my dad's with a blown transmission. Put in a new transmission & drove this one for about 4.5 years. Toward the end, the transmission was starting to slip in 1st, it had a terrible hot start issue (felt like running on 2 cylinders), and the A/C didn't cool amazingly well. Traded in at about 245k miles for my wife's Ford Flex. 2004 Honda Civic LX Inherited from my wife when she got the Flex. A good car that ran great & saw as high as 38mpg (drafting my dad in his Silverado on a long highway drive). Only problem we had out of it was that it jumped timing while driving (1 tooth, luckily, which wasn't enough to cause piston+valve death). Donated to my sister when we bought a truck. 2016 Ford F150 XLT Bought to further help with my wife's business, as loading/unloading everything from her Flex was putting a strain on her back. Did a lot of shopping on this one & drove multiple 2013-14 F150s, to the point of getting 99% through a deal on a 2014 before the dealer pulled the plug on it do to a safety recall that made the truck unable to be sold retail. Found that a new 2016 could be had for about the same price. Lucky for the warranty on this one. Multiple visits to the dealer for issues with the panoramic sunroof (rattles, squeaks). Treaded in just prior to warranty expiration, as the dealer was unable to resolve the sunroof issues & I was past the limit for lemon law. Current Garage Occupants: 2013 Ford Flex SEL Wife's current DD We decided we wanted a larger vehicle with our growing family, and my wife was in an MLM company and needed the cargo space for hauling her inventory. Still have this one & just over 150k miles. Problem free (apart from the no crank issue I'd posted on here) & low maintenance so far. Has only needed gas, oil changes & 1 set of tires. 2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 Sport Current DD for me. When we decided to get rid of the truck, I test drove just about everything that I had even remote interest in. Kia Stinger, Honda Accord, Mazda6, Hyundai Genesis/G80, VW GTI, VW Golf Alltrack, Mercedes C400. The Stinger was my top choice, but they had just come out & dealers were not budging much off of full MSRP. GTI wasa my 2nd choice, but the Autobahn trim was out of our budget. Was just about set to make a deal on a new Mazda6, when I stumbled on the Mercedes. Drove a couple C400s & loved them, but the plug was pulled on those when I talked to my ins agent. Premiums were nearly double what they are for the C300. Ended up in a CPO C300 with 16k miles for almost 50% of original sticker price. A few warranty repaired issues later & the car has been great. Only original complaint is that the OE Continental tires wore out to the wear bars on the rear in just 16k miles. 2001 Indian Scout Not technically mine, but living in my garage at the moment. Belongs to my father-in-law who is en route to relocating to Houston after selling their house in CA. He's made a few trips out here & brought a few loads to make the final move a bit easier. Conveniently, he left the keys & it gets ridden a bit by me on a nice day. - Wow, this ended up being a lot longer than I expected it to be. The Enemy's gate is down.

To the best of my recollection in the order of purchase: 1980 Camaro Z/28 First car. 1984 Dodge Colt Commuter 1978 CJ5 Jeep Broke it every weekend. 1969 Camaro RS/SS My Excalibur. Electric Blue, 4 speed, 4:11 posi, 383 stroker. 1971 Roadrunner Fastest car I've ever owned. Beat a Honda CBR900 from a rolling start to 120mph. 1966 Chevy Pickup Big ugly beast but had the best running 327 Chevy small block. 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo That was a fun sports car with a 10,000 rpm inline 6. 1991 GMC Cyclone AWD turbo truck. Not sure why I needed this but it was a blast to drive. 1998 S10 ZR2 First new vehicle. 1979 Camaro Z/28 Fix and flip. 1995 Grand Prix Started my family and needed a sedan. 1993 Cavalier Wagon Got it from an uncle for $200. 2002 Dodge Intrepid Boring but reliable and comfy. 2001 Dodge Dakota V8 and 5 speed. 1994 Dodge minivan Wife got a smoking deal on this from a friend. 1966 Plymouth Fury Got it from a coworker. It was all original with 45k on the odometer. Air conditioning was ice cold. 1960 Chevy C10 Apache Hot rod project truck. Ended up being my daily driver for almost 4 years. 2012 Honda Civic Commuter. 2015 Honda Accord Wife's new car. 2018 Tacoma TRD Current and bestest ride.

As you'll see, not too many cars during the years 1974 Audi 100 My first car at the age of 21. Can't remember mileage, but bought in 1982. Nice little car, manual shift, got rear ended and totaled 7 months later by a kid driving his grandmother's Cadillac. 1979 Dodge Colt Bought this with insurance money from my totaled Audi, had 70,000 miles, got it for 800 bucks. A workhorse, auto tranny, got me thru the last years of college and beyond. Traded it in. 1985 Honda Civic Hatchback Bought it brand new for $5100 OTD. First new car. Manual shift, no factory radio, ended up installing an aftermarket cassette player. Drove this one a lot for 11 years, carried a lot of stuff in the back. Camping, bike trips, moving, etc. Had a 12" diameter dent (hit and run in parking lot) on the passenger door in the last few years, but no other accidents. Approx 170,000 mi, donated it after the drivetrain needed major work. 1996 Toyota Tacoma 2WD Extended Cab My first truck, this was a real workhorse. Manual shift, first new car purchased with cash. Got a Leer camper shell for it. Awesome vehicle, took advantage of the rear bed. No accidents except for a slightly dented in rear chrome bumper from a rear ender at a stop light. Sold it 14 years later, had a little over 200k miles. 2010 Toyota Tacoma 4WD TRD Offroad Ext cab Purchased new, my current everyday driver. My favorite so far. One of the last ones off the assembly line in Fremont CA. Has a Snugtop shell, Wet Okole seat covers . Auto tranny, stick shift was getting annoying in CA traffic. No accidents so far, has 93,000 mi 2017 Toyota Sienna minivan Bought the basic L model, new in Texas. Use it as my cargo van for my work. Removed the passenger seats, replaced with cargo mats. Use it just for work. It drives nicer than some other cargo vans I tried out. When I don't need it for work anymore, I'll install the seats back to a passenger van. My wife currently drives a 2018 Acura RDX. Her previous car was a 2000 Honda CRV that died in 2017, had over 200k mi. There are a couple of "other" category vehicles in this list (motorcycles, and one Class A RV), but my "rule" is they had to be street legal and registered to ME to be considered one of my vehicles. The first (Olds 98) I actually won in a contest in about 1978. It was a trade-in at a local dealer, worth about $200 at the time. These are roughly in the order I purchased them. I currently still own the Mazda3, Jeep Wrangler, and kind-of the Ford Ranger. 1963 Oldsmobile 98 Triumph TR-4A 1963 VW Bus VW Squareback Suzuki GS-500 motorcycle Chevy Vega Ford Pinto Ford Van Datsun/Nissan pickup diesel Toyota Land Cruiser FJ-40 Yamaha Virago 920 motorcycle Harley Sportster 1976 Mitsubishi pickup Jeep Grand Cherokee Volvo 240 SW GMC Suburban Toyota Tacoma 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ-55 Nissan Pathfinder 1994 Kia Rio 2002? 1. 1953 Ford coupe, V-8 manual on the tree. Bought used from a lady my dad knew on his milk route (he was a milkman). Had 25,000 miles on it. Paid $300 for it in 1959 and drove it a little more than a year until I graduated from college. Sold it to a cousin for $300 in 1960. 2. 1960 Ford Falcon, bought new in Feb 1960, financed by my dad's credit union. Don't remember what engine it had, but it was adequate. No a/c. Manual transmission. Almost immediately drove it 4500 miles from Detroit, MI to Mt. Hebo AFS, Oregon--my first assignment following being commissioned a 2Lt in USAF. The long route was to avoid potential weather problems in winter, and to visit my grandparents (all 4) and other relatives. I drove that little car 6 years and sold it to my mom for $1 when I bought a new vehicle. The Falcon was a First Year model and since I had moved from Michigan I missed getting a notice from Ford that a modification was needed in the rocker arm assembly, so it failed and I had to get it replaced. The little jewel had no other problems. 3. 1966 Ford Mustang, bought new in 1966, red with black interior, V-8, 4 in the floor manual, single exhaust. Peppy little car. Was delivered in Wilcox, Arizona while I was TDY on Johnston Island in the Pacific. My dad (with my permission) took delivery and "broke it in" for me (cars bach then were expected to have a break-in period). My dad had a lead foot and lived in VERY rural Arizona, so when I took possession of the car I could not keep it under 80 mph on good roads! I loved that little car, and took it with me when I got assigned to Iran in 1969. When I was reassigned back to the States in 1971 I sold the Mustang to a US GI in Tehran. 4. Upon my return I expected to buy a new Mustang, but they'd made it so big and clumsy that I rebelled and bought a new 1971 Pinto as a protest. It had a 1600cc 4-cyl engine, 4-in-the-floor manual, and AIR CONDITIONING (I'd learned my lesson with no a/c in the previous 2 vehicles). Bright "Pinto Blue" exterior. Great little car--drove in loose sand almost as if had tracks. Another "First Year" model, this one also had a maintenance notice I didn't get, and the clutch linkage broke while in Sumter, SC. The local Ford shop just welded it back for me ($5) and I had no more problems. (No, I did not have an issue with the fuel tank!) It did have to have 3 timing belts, though. I drove it for 9 years, and took it to Germany in 1977. When I retired and returned to the States I sold it to a US GI in 1980. 5. Upon my return to the US I visited relatives in Detroit--an uncle was a long-time employee of the Ford Mercury plant and he wangled me a deal for a new 1980 Mercury Capri. It had a V-8 and 4-speed manual, with a/c. It was a nice little car, but I tired of it after 6 years (in Dallas--I ended up there after my retirement) and traded it in on 6. A new 1986 Ford Mustang GT, red with black vinyl top, 5L V-8, dual exhausts, 5-speed manual (and a/c, of course--I was in Texas!). I loved that little car! I ran into the guy who owned the dealership (at a gun range) and he told me that if I kept up with the routine maintenance it would be good for at least 200,000 miles. I think he was right. I bought it in 1986 and finally sold it in 2006 after driving it 183,000 miles, and it was still going strong. 7. After 20 years I finally decided I wanted a new car, and in 2006 I bought a new 2006 Mustang GT, "Torch Red" exterior and red interior, 4.6L V-8 and automatic transmission. (Yeah, I know--but I was getting old and had had leg injuries and city traffic just didn't work well with me and a clutch any more). Air conditioning, of course. I've been driving it as my Daily Driver all the years since (13) and am still satisfied (although I really miss the stronger engine). 8. Back in the late 1980s or early 1990s, my best friend in Denison, TX told me about a guy up there who had an acre full of old Mustangs and rebuilt them as a hobby. I ended up purchasing one from him--a 1966 model with 289 V-8 and LOUD dual exhausts (love it!). I had planned on a manual transmission for it, but the guy ahead of me in line had this one built (with a C-4 auto) and in all other aspects it was what I wanted--he decided not to buy it, so I did instead of waiting another 6 months for mine to be built. In 2005 I drove that sweet little car 11,750 miles over 85 days from Dallas to Cartwright, Labrador and back (with lots of coverage of the eastern US and Canada). The gravel roads in Labrador did take their toll and I did have to have some bolts tightened along the way. I also had the a/c plumbing refreshed and a wheel bearing tightened en route. That car still resides in my garage here in Dallas, and I do take it out occasionally. For a short time, after buying the 2006 Mustang and before selling off the 1986 one, I had 3 red Mustangs, dated 20 years apart! 9. Around 2000 I saw a local ad for a 1977 Ford F-150 pickup truck with a 460 cid engine, and bought it. I had a rowdy dual exhaust system put in it and it really rumbled! I loved that ride. In 2001 someone stole it from in front of my job site. I was devastated. (It didn't help that there were 6 of my favorite guns in it, either. So far, 3 of them have been recovered.) 10. On the rebound from that traumatic episode, I found a 1969 Ford F-100 pickup in Arizona with a 460 and bought it. It was set up for drag racing so I had it trailered to Dallas. I could hardly keep it from breaking the tires loose when taking off at a light. And--the leg room was insufficient and I was afraid I might fail to get my foot up onto the brake pedal, so I sold it. (It did sound nice, though . . . .) I won't do my 3 motorcycles here--this is a "Car" thread. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

Spiritually Imperfect |
1973 Chevelle: had been set on fire, previously. 1979 Camaro: My dad ordered it with a 4-speed. 1989 Beretta GTU: first new car, straight out of college. 1991 Camaro RS: the 305 V8 was a dud. But it sounded good. 1993 Nissan Sentra SE-R: My love. Modded, raced, tracked. Ran 12.80 @ 110mph. Owned for 20 years. It now resides in a friend's garage, and I have the option to buy it back. 1999 Eclipse Spyder convertible: It was a passing fancy. 2000 Ford F-150 Lightning: It towed the SE-R and ran at the dragstrip. Beast. 2004 BMW 330Ci ZHP coupe: I still have it. It is almost perfect, as-is. 1993 Nissan 240sx convertible: A rare one. Restored it and sold it to my parents, who used as a summer car until Hurricane Matthew took it in 2016. 2012 Nissan Maxima SV: needed a family sedan. Sold it to my employer this summer. 2016 Ford Fiesta ST: Funnest car I've ever driven. Modding has begun. Makes it even funner. This message has been edited. Last edited by: VictimNoMore,
