I don't imagine anyone could've survived that. Not even Maverick was able to pull out of a stall like that. Tragic.

My wife was looking over my shoulder and said "Jeeze, seems like there's an awful lot of aviation accidents lately" so I pulled up the FlightAware site and showed her how many planes are in the air right now.

Her: "You're shitting me!"

Me: "Nope. When you think of it, it's amazing there aren't MORE accidents."

Our SF pilots will probably weigh in on this soon and correct me, but I thought that a flat spin like shown in the video is very difficult to recover from.

So, not being a pilot, what causes a plane to go into a flat spin like that? Loss of power?

^Also not a pilot, but my understanding is that multi-engine planes are susceptible to flat spins, and difficult to recover from. Perhaps an asymmetrical thrust situation?

Mechanical failure and/or pilot error.

Real pilots will be along soon to give a more thorough nuanced answer, but it really boils down to this. Bad day for everybody involved.

I rather think the missing right elevator had something to do with it, but what do I know?

According to this, the center gravity of the aircraft shifts too far rearward. Perhaps a load in the cargo hold wasn't properly secured and shifted backwards?
